OK well i dont want my engine to fall over and i was kinda scared when doing it so i stoped. I have two jacks on the front of my car lifting it. I put two stands and a 2x4 under my oil pan. I have another jack holding my trans, the only thing is im not sure if when i put the engine on the stand its gonna balance. One guy said he could lift the 2.2 out of his bay. I dont know how much the 2.5 weights but i dont think its possible unless that guy was superman. Would it be best to lift it onto the stands? I just really dont know and i need some info before i start doing my heads on mon or tue. Anyone who has lifted there engine up a little to do there heads or anything else, can u just give me a few pointers or what u did? Thanks -Nick

buy or rent a hoist. jacking and lowering the engine to do the heads is a royal PIA, did that once, never do it again, pull the engine, it's easier and faster.

Well its already been a PIA so i called around. AutoZone said no, Napa was closed, PepBoys didnt answer and im still calling around but if anyone knows of any known shops that do this or any idea would be great.

OK called and found a place. $30 for the day, so thats bring me to this. My engine is all disconnected even off pressure plate but placed back on. Can i do my heads in a day or two if i do non stop work, because if im going to have it for a few days why not spend a little more and just buy one. Im really really short on cash so im trying not to buy one. So can it be done in one day?

if u have a proper tool store around, you should be able to buy your own for about $150.

if you don't need to have machine work done there's no reason it can't be done in a few hours. I've gotten full head jobs done by lunch. Without the experience you should still be able to have the engine back in in a day no problem. Just make sure you have some boards to put the motor on if you don't have an engine stand. I saw something someone built on here or legacycentral that looks like it worked pretty well. Without it it will be hard to torque down the head bolts, you won't be able to do it while the engine is swinging on the hoist and using an old tire doesn't really work for pulling off the heads. I just bolt them to an engine stand, makes quick work out of the whole thing.

If you're going to deck the heads, well then it depends on the machine shop since you'll have to wait for them.

Well im not getting any engine work done and im just planning on doing the heads. So could i put a bunch of 2x4's on the ground with a sheet of would wood on top of it to put the engine on, Would this work ok? Also do i need to take my hood off to do this?

Too bad you don't live in CT, my grandfather who passed away a few years ago has an insanely large garage, and it has an electric chain hoist perfect for picking engines out.
That thing is just begging to be used for a beast of a conversion. Too bad I don't have the time or the patience.

Might be a good idea - it's pretty easy to get on/off. Though you can hook the hood bar on another one of those holes on the hood so that it the hood stands almost vertically up and probably get enough room to work also.
