I'm assuming this is the front main seal? I think I had that replace on my other 99 LGT.. cause it was leaking from the same area. Ran me $600 to get it replaced... and that was a GOOD price. =/

How hard it is to replace.. im not so sure myself.. i think they have to pull a lot of stuff off.. like timing belt, etc..etc..

I could be completely wrong however. Download the FSM outta my sig if you wanna look it up for yourself however.

BTW.. that gasket looks really weird? Is that the gasket coming out..or bends? wtf.. haha. Hope u can get it fixed =/

That gasket is just a dust seal for your belt cover. The oil is coming from either the front crank seal or the cam seals (likely the crank in that position). Either way do them all (common problem for all those seal to leak). If your timing belt is due, do that too (since you need to take it off anyway). The rubber you photographed will be swollen and fall off when you remove the cover. You have two options, buy a new seal, or cut part of the swollen part out. I do this all the time with a razor and put a dab of black rtv on the seal in order to hold it back on the cover. If the dust seal doesn't seal up perfectly don't worry about it, it's not that important.

Mine was leaking in the same location. It was a slight drip, and then it got worse in a matter of weeks. From a slow seap to basically a steady drip after the car is off. It was the cam seal behind the oil pump.
The only good thing about this is if you haven't replaced your timing belt/oil pump/ cam seal/crank seal they can all be replaced and your cost of repairs won't be so bad because you'll have so much done for the amount of money you pay. Basically everything I had replaced had to be removed to get to that friggin seal. I had the whole front of the engine resealed and a new belt and oil pump put on and it cost about $480.

HOLY CRAP! $600 for just the front main seal? It cost me $200 for Front Main seal, all 4 cam seals, and a timing belt!

Edit: When my cam seals went, my motor would pump out about a quart of oil a day. It was pretty bad. I left a trail of oil from my house to the shop, you could actually follow it by just looking at the road.

Ummm weren't you complaining about the shitty work they did and your cam seals were leaking again? Maybe that's why it was a $200 job.

The local Subaru dealer did mine for around $400.That was with a tune up and my crank pulley as well.

Um, no... After all of those seals were replaced, another seal blew out on the motor unrelated to the ones replaced. My mechanic did an awesome job on the seals that had blown out before, and almost refused any kind of payment for fixing the other seal, but I insisted on paying him. If I had given in, it would have been 5 seals plus timing belt replaced for $200.

According to that thread yes. If it was a whole different seal great, happy to see you leak free.

what everyone has said. Go ahead, go in and replace your timing blet, cam seals, crank seal, possibly your oil pump o ring, and waterpump while you're in there.

crap. i checked my oil this past friday and it was full, then i drove the car up to north NJ and back, id say about 150 miles total... just checked my oil and its down to low. that seems like a huge difference... and yes, oil was checked at the proper time both times. looks like it really is time to reseal this engine. on my way back home i watched my odometer hit 111,111.

I found it for you.

"Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. It features cardboard end caps for the filter element that are glued in place. The rubber anti-drainback valve seals against the cardboard and frequently leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. The bypass valves are plastic and are sometimes not molded correctly, which allows them to leak all the time. The stamped-metal threaded end is weakly constructed and it has smaller and fewer oil inlet holes, which may restrict flow. I had one of these filters fail in my previous car. The filter element collapsed and bits of filter and glue were circuilating through my system. The oil passge to the head became blocked and the head got so hot from oil starvation that it actually melted the vacuum lines connected to it as well as the wires near it."

"Another bad filter idea brought to you by your friends at Fram. The filter itself is a slightly improved design over the Fram Extra Guard, but still uses the same filter element. It has a silicone anti-drainback valve, a quality pressure releif valve, and enough inlet holes for good flow. The big problem is that they are trying to cash in on the Slick 50 craze. They impregnate the filter element with bits of Teflon like that found in Slick 50. As with Slick 50, Teflon is a solid and does not belong in an engine. It cannot get into the parts of the engine that oil can and therefore does nothing. Also, as the filter gets dirty, it ends up filtering the Teflon right out. Dupont (the manufacturer of Teflon) does not recommend Teflon for use in internal combustion engines. Please do not waste your money on this filter"

Get Purolator, I usualy get motorcraft which is just a a pure one in a reg purolator case.
