I would like to upgrade my 1990 2.2l. I want a turbo engine. I saw this one and was wondering if it would be an easy swap.

Also would a tranny from a 1991 or 1992 EJ22t bolt to this? my second gear is out and I found a tranny at the salvage yard.

Stay away from it.
( 2.0L / DOHC / TURBO )
ENGINE CODE - EJ25
Right there is one reason, and the second is, there isn't much of a way to tell WHICH engine this really is. Did it come out of a Legacy or an Impreza?
Other than that, I was going to ramble on about ODB and emissions, but you've got a '90 Legacy, so I suppose that you wouldn't have to fudge around with emissions as much. You WILL need an ECU with that motor, your ECU won't run it, that's for sure. You'll need to hack the wiring harness, too, and most certainly get a new transmission (saw you mention it). You'll probably want a new rear diff.
The wiring is going to be a PITA. I'd say forget it and drop in a USDM 2.5 Phase II motor, better bang for your buck, plus you'll have ODBII to help with tuning. If you're set on going turbo, then I'd suggest getting a USDM WRX or STi motor and transmission. regardless, it's going to be expensive for you...

Whoa. Holy uneducated motor seller.
Like was said above, they call it a 2.0 liter motor, from 1990-1994. I don't know of any 2.0liter motors sold in america in that time period. So maybe JDM. But then they call it an EJ25 (naturally aspirated 2.5 liter engine) when clearly, the exhaust manifold is wrapping around in front of the motor to mate up with a turbo.
It's also a DOHC motor just by looking at that timing belt cover, you can see the 4 cam pulleys. DOHC motors came later in production years.
As for the EJ22T transmission bolting to your car, it should. The only difference might be the gearing. Contact matt monson on awdpirates to make sure though. In fact, he could probably source you a motor and tranny for $600 or less.

Thanks I did see all that and was confused. I may just look for a legacy turbo and just buy it.
