What is the purpose of all those "gourds" (plastic containers) that come stock on this intake anyway?

YESSIR!!
My bad, I started a new post instead of replying to an earlier one. But yes, those are what I was wondering about. I saw where someone had Meineke bend them a piece of 2.5 inch metal tube that replaced all that plastic. I want to know what those are for before I take them out.
Thanks.

I have an earlier Legacy (HFS is the one who did the metal pipe job, btw) but I think those plastic boxes are for harmonic silencing. In the intake, all you really have to worry about are the filter and the MAF...so I'd say that they're pretty useless except for slowing down the air.

Thanks!
I'm sure "MAF" stands for something simple and obvious, but my divining skills are weak at the moment. Could someone enlighten me?
Also, HFS, what did that pipe add? Was it just sound or did it add responsiveness, power, +1 sword skill?
I love the look of it and am tempted to do it just for that :!:

There's more engineering going on in there than you think.

Well my car doesn't have a MAF, so I didn't have to worry about that...
It definetely helps at higher RPMs when the engine needs more air like around 4500 RPMs. I can feel more power all the way up to red line, and added to the sound of the intake.
As for that box thing, there is a hole in the bottom of the plastic piping that drops into that box. I am pretty sure its purpose is if anything big and heavy happens to find its way into your intake it will end up in there. When I took mine off, i find a little piece of a leaf in there and dust.
Think of it this way, when you get the Cold Air Intake from say Cobb, none of it is there. What I did was 1/2 CAI and 1/2 stock.

my car doesn't much look like that, but if it's a hollow box attached to the intake pipe, then it is to add volume and minimize pressure differential to the intake so it doesn't stutter at low rpm. At higher rpm it's out of the way of the airflow so it's not a restriction.
Or so i understand.

I checked last night and found no sensors attached to any of the intake tubes/gourds. I think I'll try and find a place that will bend the pipe for me tonight. If anything, it's easily reversible and looks way cooler than stock.
Thanks to all for the info!

The box is a drop for larger objects (as HFS said), but also acts as a resonator and quiets the intake. The other smaller ones serve a similar purpose and also help to remove heavy moisture from the air before it enters the engine.
