I dont recall any previous wrx's with a plastic IM

i quote from car & driver december issue (about the 08 wrx):

"The engine's four-armed intake tract has been changed from aluminum to plebeian black plastic. It might be lighter and cheaper, but it won't encourage WRX lovers to crack their hoods at the hamburger stand."

... im sure the sti will have an aluminim intake tract however... i hope.

There's actually a lot of threads over at nastysock where people talk about the plastic manifold and how to adapt it to earlier cars. I THINK it was on the 05+ RS's. It's apparently a really good design and repels/releases heat a lot better than the classic metal ones. Plus gets rid of a few frontal pounds.

Yeah, the plastic intake has some advantages and disadvantages.

At least they didn't make it out of magnesium (like some old VW blocks).

Say, if I could find a way to make a custom intake manifold, I could rig up something for that supercharger I've got laying around. :lol:

thank you. exactly right. and im sorry but i cringe when i see performace machines with plastic IMs. theres just smthg wrong with that. few lbs lighter and less heat... then i wonder why the sti didnt have a plastic IM and why i dont typically see them on high peformance engines...hmm... im sure the performance gain is minimal and i would never change my shiny metal mani for a black plastic one.

I wonder how it would work going from freezing cold conditions to burning hot conditions in the north east. Seems to me like they probably should have tested that, or else there is going to be a lot of plastic a' breakin over long periods of time. Plus.. it just looks hideous.. haha thats what i was complaning about. Looks like it came straight from china. :lol:

THEY meaning SUBARU. Why would it be a huge shock Imprezas have the plastic manifold if the Legacy already had it for a couple of years?

The Legacy got the plastic IM in 2005.

2004 Impreza RS had a plastic manifold. It was only for one year. Subaru changed back to alloy in the 2005 with a better runner design.

If you go to legacygt.com you will see many high boost/hp Legacy's there running the resign intake manifold with no issues. Its not like they are using fisher-price parts on our engines. The resign intake maifold has better flow characteristics than the older ones, and as people have already stated, it decreases heat transfer to the intake charge. I'm sure there are disadvantages as well, but unless you plan on making an 800hp drag strip monster, I don't think you have to worry.

The early plastic manifolds on other cars had cracking issues, that and perceived strength of metal over plastic, kind of leads a lot of people into thinking plastic in one of the main components of a car engine is inherently cheap.

Also add that plastic manifolds are molded much more smoothly and have less casting boogers than an equivalent alloy manifold, so if there are two made from the same design, the plastic manifold is usually better flowing.

Seriously though, I was out in town last night, drunk of course, and I saw a new WRX. I stopped, looked at it, and had the urge to kick in a few panels. Honestly, with the popularity of the WRX/STi design, you would think that Subaru would see what the people would like about the new design before it was put into production. I know ALOT of people probably feel the same way. Fuckin Toyota...

EDIT: Found them using the search function (go figure :lol: ) and I'm split on the looks, it def. neeeds a more agressive front end to pull it off, the stock L front end doesn't look right, but the GT front looks ok.

A BD with an STi spoiler and an STi style scoop is perfectly proportioned compared to an STi. The wing and scoop fit better with the rest of the car...

i on the other hand think the sti spoiler doesnt work at all on a BD, scoop or no scoop. it doesnt follow the lines of the car at all IMO
