CEL - P0301: Cylinder 1 misfire

i got a CEL driving down the highway today... went straight to autozone and checked it; its P0301 - cylider 1 misfire. has this happened to anyone? i cleared the code and it didnt come back during the short ride home, but i have a feeling it will. my first thought is to change the ignition wires as they havent been changed once yet and the car has 111000 miles on it.

Looks like you just answered your own question. Wires that old probably absorb moisture; was it raining out.. or damp?? That's happened to me a couple times actually.

If there was something REALLY bad with one of your cylinders, like one of them wasn't firing at all, your CEL would flash. Cylinder misfire isn't that bad of a code.. just change plugs/wires and you should be good to go!

replace the sparkplug wires. I bought magnacores for my car with iridium spark plugs. :wink:

+1 for plugs and wires. Mine decided to show me how bad the wires were when the radiator hose blew coolant all over it :)

ok now im confused ... ive been trying to find an ignition wire set for my 97 subaru legacy 2.5gt and the NGK website says i need part #FX54, but RockAuto and other sites say i need part #FX45. i find it hard to believe that the NGK site messed up, but it sure seems that way. does anyone know the right NGK wire set part #?

and one more thing... if i go for example here:

there are two NGK wire sets, both FX45, but with diff prices.. what is the diff?

FX45 is for the 96 2.5, I go with what NGK says over that site.

look at your coil pack. Do you have long boots connected or short ones? More than likely you have the long ones which are different from the 95-96 coil packs which have short boots and a different metal connector.

ok thanks a lot guys, ill be ordering some NGK wires and spark plugs... just gotta decide between the iridium ones (7.32 a piece) or the copper v-power ones (1.76 a pop). luckily wire set is only $43...

Even though copper may not last as long as iridium; our cars love them! I'd stick with copper.. they're cheaper and have better conductive properties.
