View Full Version : Very strange brake issue

So I had this weird noise on my car when I would turn right... it was a rubbing sound on the driver side rear. It was evident that the noise was brake related and the calipers and pads were near their end. I then proceeded to replace all my brakes with some off an '02 WRX that I scored for a great price. I was going to do this upgrade anyway, but had hoped the problem would subside.

It didn't however. The pads are new in rear and used in front. I replaced the entire caliper, brackets, rotors, and pads on all corners. I investigated further and it appears that on loaded right hand corners (certain amount of load, slower corners don't cause this) the hub is flexing causing the 'cup' as I'll call it to contact the rotor. I took my angle grinder and clearanced it 1/16th to see if it would stop, but it only made it so I had to put a little more load on the corner for it to grind.

a highlight couple pics:

Wear on rotor and hub are consistent with the old rotor also. I verified with the car on the lift and a stethoscope that the bearings are good along with my good Subaru Certified Tech buddy. CV joints are all good as well as the half shafts.

He's researching tech docs now as he's a bit stumped like me. I was almost sure it was just going to be a bad bearing, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Any thoughts? I searched sl-i, but couldn't find a post with this same problem.

Thanks - Jon

Stupid question, but maybe the spring/shock is getting worn and is unable to maintain the weight under load?

Sounds strange that a hub would be flexing that much...?

yea only thing i can think of that makes any sense is the wheel bearing.... so idk.

Agreed. Only thing left is to pull the hub and dis assemble. Perhaps someone somehow messed up the bearing install.

As for the dampers... they shouldn't be a factor since they bolt in two spots to the hub... but regardless... all 4 dampers are new GR2's as of < 2 months. Springs are still stock, but I do plan to lower the car sometime.

The part responsible for holding those 2 parts in alignment with each other is the wheel bearing. It may sound ok but play in the bearing is the only reason I can think of for those 2 parts to contact each other.

Glad to hear others are thinking the same.

I'll be sure to update this thread once the problem is resolved.

i had the exacty same problem and it was the wheel bearing. i was told you'll usually hear a clicking and when its really bad, you'll get the grinding..

Ok.

but I have no clicking or grinding... except in the corner :D

I'll just plan to replace it soon.

my wheel bearings are shot, you'll eventually here a grinding/shearing/kinda like scraping ice sound...and it'll get louder as accelerated...
