View Full Version : Thinking about ripping out carpet...

As long as I'm dreaming here, I am considering possibly removing carpet flooring in the gt. Anybody ever think about replacing it with all-weather (i.e. rubber, weatherproof) material? I like carpeting and all, but it can become a pain. I don't think I'll be able to restore carpet to the showroom look it had, obviously, but I wonder if it will ever really look nicer compared to just ripping it out and setting up new material.
Thoughts?

The problem is that your carpet covers lots of wires and stuff too, so it's hard to just spray it with rhino liner or something without some more prep. I'd check into one of those pre-cut replacement carpets, they usually take a little work to get to fit right but it will be new carpet.

If you routed the wires in some tubing, and anchored it to the sides of the car, you could get away with rhinolining the interior.
That'd be pretty sweet, and original.
The only thing I'd be overly concerned with would be the lines for the fuel pump under the rear seat, but you don't have to rhinoline as far as under there.
Props for a cool idea.

I got my idea from the Nissan Xterra, and how it has all-weather floormats, all around the floor. I think that would be a great idea + possibly easy cleanup.
Possibly. I dunno, this could turn interesting...

I personally like the Honda Element. The interior of that thing is practically waterproof...

Yep, only thing is would it be easier to clean? It's not like you can take a hose and spray down the interior like you can a truck bed or bottom of a car that is rhinolined. It's great stuff, but from what I remember it's textured, so it won't wipe off with a rag or anything if you get dirt in it.
It's a good idea though. See where it takes you, and if it turns out great, I'll probably copy you

The other problem is that the carpet also has insulation attached to the underside. This is both to help keep heat inside the car in winter, but also greatly reduces noise. I've had widows broken out of cars before, and completely removed the interior and carpeting to clean the glass out and had to go somewhere with it that way, and it's annoyingly loud inside with that all pulled out.

I dunno... something about this makes me want to keep going. Besides, my carpet is somewhat stained up with dirt, mud, rain, rocks, etc. and it would be great to start fresh.
(Obviously not saying this would come cheap or easy, but the idea is still getting my attention.)
I wonder how thick the material would need to be? I'll be doing research!

They can spray the rhino liner on in various thicknesses, your best bet might be to find your local rhinoliner place and go talk to them about it.

I've always wanted to see someone have their whole car (exterior) done in rhinolining.
As for your interior, I was thinking it would look cool if you put down diamond plate and had rhinoliner put on that.

you could always have new carpet installed and scotchguard the entire thing... Use removable pieces with industrial velcro for the parts that get worn easily... footwells
