View Full Version : BE rear deck speaker openings...

I was in my trunk the other day (literally. I had a water leak and was trying to find it) and I noticed that there are speaker cut outs (with metal blanks in them instead of speakers) on the rear deck. They are oval. Does anyone know what size speakers fit in there? I've been thinking about a bit of a mild audio upgrade with new speakers all around and maybe a small amp with some good speakers for the rear deck. And by the way, if you are over 6ft tall and 220 lbs don't try to get into the trunk of a BE...

6x9 probably, as they're oval.
You can use anything you want in there, just make the right cuts and drill the right holes... no worries.

They should be 6 1/2". I never seen 6x9's in a Legacy, but if they are indeed oval then I would agree with Roger on 6x9's.

I'd never seen ovals in a Legacy either. The cut out looked too small to be a 6X9. More like that smaller size that Fords take. I need to measure it to be sure. I'll snap a pic of it if I get a chance.

one of those holes is for a rear wiper motor that is installed in japan on all BEs. i saw those too but pulling wires all the way to the trunk just for speakers doesnt make much sence unless you get a trunk sub or at least install midrange speakers in there.

That's kinda what I was thinking about doing though. I'd start with some good speakers in the openings and then adding a trunk sub. I charged the batteries for my camara so I'll try to get a pic tomorrow. I could have sworn there were two openings that looked like speaker openings...

you probably could get speakers in there but you will have to cut the holes in your rear deck cover for any sound to pass thruogh and put grills on top of the holes.

Well, after looking again there is only one oval opening. The other one is square. I guess it looked oval from where I was laying in the trunk LOL. I guess I'll just get some new 6.5" for the doors and maybe a nice sub for the trunk. This has probably been asked a dozen times but does anyone know the max depth of speakers that can be used in the door openings without having to extend them out? Anyone have any good brand/model suggestions for door replacements?

There was an option to have a 6x9 in that 5th (or 7th if you count the tweeters) opening in European and/or Asian BE's.

yeah, I don't know if any of the NYC guys have seen it, but andivic has the rear deck speakers installed on his BE (I don't know if he still has the car though...).

Then it's not a BE. It's a BD (sedan). Check your VIN#.
You have to remove your rear seats and your rear parcel shelf tray to change speakers.

If its a BE (2000-2004) then the there should only be 1 spot- its a 6x9 for the McIntosh sub from the outback sedan
If its a 96 I have no clue
