Do you guys recomend having the timing belt and other belts changed at the 60,000 mark? How much for that type of work?
Depends on what year your car is and what the service schedule says. For 2002 Subarus it is recommended every 105k miles. I got mine done at the dealer and it was about $600 and included almost all the items on the 60k service interval.

Follow what the service manual says... it's worked for many a car.
$500-600 is ballpark for that kind of work.

Funny thing is that these belts last 105,000 miles in California while they only last 60,000 miles for the rest of the country. They are the same parts, but California says any emissions related parts must be covered for more than 100,000 miles. Funny how when Subaru would have to pay for it they say it will last almost twice as long. Would I suggest waiting for a 100,000? No,
but I also think it says it is not critical if it goes 10,000 or 15,000 over. So have it done if you like, but I would not wait too long.
