I have spent the majority of the day reading the swap information here. I really think that this summer I will be doing the EJ20 swap into my '99 30th Ann. Wagon.
Question is......
I really don't plan on making crazy power amounts. I would really be happy with the stock USDM EJ20 asside from a FMIC, and a better flowing exhaust (Guessing about 160-170hp or so to the wheels). No increases in boost, mainly leaving the stock engine alone.
What is the liklyhood that a STOCK REBUILD of the current EJ22 5 speed, taking the punishment from a very slightly modified USDM EJ20? :-? Thanks for the help, I hope that I didn't miss this somewhere........

You really shouldn't have any issues with it. From what I've seen, guys with WRX transmissions break them just as often as guys with RS transmissions. If you could get an 05+ transmission they have the dual-cone syncro on on 1st, so that's nice, but it doesn't make that huge a difference. Especially if you're rebuilding it.
If you're not going above stock boost though, I wouldn't even bother with a fmic for an EJ20. You'll just increase your lag making the stock turbo charge all that piping. I'm running a completely stock EJ20 out of a 2005 WRX (well, I have a turboback exhaust) in my impreza, and am making 160whp. Maybe an STi top mount, but really, you don't need it for what you're looking to do right now. Spend the money on engine + tranny mounts or something to go in during the swap.
Good luck! Swaps are quire an undertaking, but are super duper fun when they're done

Great! That is what I was wondering. I didn't know if the N/A 5 Speeds could deal with the EJ20 power. My mothers new husband runs a Subaru Shop, and has done a few EJ20 swaps before. With any luck, I should be able to start gathering parts.
I was planning on doing a FMIC trying to keep a "sleeper" look. I would rather not have a top mount, thus I would not need a hoodscoop. In a month or so I will start a thread on the mods that are going to happen, and the progress. I can't wait to get started!!
You probably already know this but you'll want to replace/upgrade the clutch.

Don't go FMIC with the stock turbo...please. If you go FMIC you'll need to make cuts to route the piping, and you'll have stupid lag. Then you'll upgrade the turbo and have to retune the car, and then something else will fall off.
If you want to be really sleeper, keep the hood and just use a water/air intercooler instead. It'll sit in the same place the TMIC sits, but it'll be under the hood.
Whereabouts is this shop located? Traverse City is right up in the Catcher's Mitt there...

Yea, trust us, stock turbo + front mount = lag. I had a friend who insisted on putting a front mount on his WRX, and the thing had so much turbo lag I couldn't even believe it.
You don't need a big, custom hood scoop or anything. Just get an OEM hood with a scoop, you'll get plenty of airflow for a stock topmount, and topmounts are more sleeper anyways. It's why I kept the topmount setup when I did my swap in my GC
Also, I second the upgraded clutch. Remember though, just because the WRX trans isn't much stronger than your 5 speed, doesn't mean its strong. Don't be launching the car or anything; while it can "handle" the power, that doesn't mean it's bulletproof by any means. Transmissions are almost always the weak point in a subaru setup.

Hey, thanks for the information. I was away in Chicago on my christmas vacation....... kinda. I talked with him and he agrees, FMIC with a stock setup sucks. I like the idea of the JDM air-water intercooler. However, I know that there are some companies that make them. Would you folks sudjest aftermarket, or JDM air-water top mount? :-?
Another cool thing is that it reduces the plumbing work! lol I agree with a upgrated clutch, granted I am about 90 percent sure that I would have to stay with a clutch for my trans, right? I am rocking the cable, and what a great leg workout in traffic! lol
I plan to start collecting parts starting in Feb. I should be getting a hefty bonus in that month, presented by no life this month.......

Oh yeah, Traverse City can be easily identified by looking at the palm of your right hand. Now move the pinky finger to the observers left slightly, and moving the thumb to the observers right slightly. Here comes the hard part........ Traverse City is located between the base of the pinky, and the base of the ring finger.
You have just been introduced to the michigan map! Stay tooned for a U.P. demonstration!!! lol
