Hey,
I need some help figuring out these engine codes. Most people know they have an EJ18, EJ22, or EJ25, but almost nobody knows what their 5th letter/number is. I am trying to match these engine codes with the cars they came from. All subarus have an ID plate under the hood and it has the engine code written on it. Can people post what codes they know ie which cars the engine came from?
Like the EJ205 is the USDM WRX 2.0 engine
And the EJ257 is the USDM STI engine.
I think having a place to referance these numbers will make it easier for us when we are in a junk yard looking for parts.
Thanks

I guess you are trying to point me towards this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine
I have seen that and it has a few of the engines there but many are missing. Too bad that wiki's on stuff like this are not always accurate either, it would be great to get more sources. To many people just say they have a EJ20T or TT, and don't understand the real naming conventions.
I specifically ran accross an EJ208 and would love to hear something about what that engine is.

EJ20T is a false code. I guess we could try to put a thread together with all the codes and make a sticky in SLi 101. I notice that some of the wiki stuff is off a bit too.

EJ208 is what the JDM STi's run, I think (2.0 twinscrolls, 8k redline, AVCS, etc)

This would be helpful actually. We should probably rewrite the Wikipedia page once we've gathered all the info.
The problem I keep running into are the engine codes for the BE, BH and BT (N/A 165 hp ones). In my manual it says the engine is an EJ251 but many Subaru part sites say it's an EJ253 (NGK is one of those that I remember). Which one is right?

ej251 is the DOHC Phase I engine, EJ253 are the phase 2 engines...
ej255 and ej257 are the turbocharged 2.5's in the LGT, FXT, STI, etc.

It's not just wiki that's wrong--Motor trend has some incorrect info too, on the suby engines.
ej251 is the DOHC Phase I engine, EJ253 are the phase 2 engines...
ej255 and ej257 are the turbocharged 2.5's in the LGT, FXT, STI, etc.
So from that, I'm gonna assume I have the EJ253 and the EJ251 is the one that's prone to headgasket issues?

They both are prone, the Phase II is less likely, and more often has an external leak, unlike the Phase I which is more likely to have an internal leak (into the combustion chamber rather than towards the outside of the block).
The Phase II then is usually easier to catch the HG going bad at an earlier stage because of it.

That is very incorrect. The EJ25D is the DOHC motor, the EJ251 is the SOHC motor in the 00 Legacy. It's the same as the 253 with a lower CR as well as some other minor changes. Phase2 engine, EJ253 is Phase 2.5. :P

Sarra is correct.
Back in the 90s, Subaru used letters instead of numbers to designate the type of engine.
ie: EJ20G, EJ20k, EJ25D
Now, numbers are used:
ie: EJ205 (02-05 WRX), EJ255 (05+ LGT, 04+ FXT, 06+ WRX), EJ257 (04-07 STi) etc etc

Ah, that makes sense then. Just an observation--but we had the front of a friends 02 wrx apart to to the timing belt. Molded clearly onto the block was 'ej20' with no 3rd letter or number.

Yeah, mine has the EJ22 stamp, no suffix number or letter. But I bet it's the same all the way through. The letter/number just highlights small differences in the block.

EJ22 NA and EJ22 Turbo motors aren't 'small differences"... You're comparing an open deck to a closed deck motor... I think they just got lazy with block stamping.

Block stamping probably indicates the casing type - not the internal configuration. The legos theory. It's all really tied to the VIN# stamped on the firewall.
I bet some in-factory photos would prove illuminating.

No need to get huffy. I was rather thinking of the EJ255 and EJ257.
The displacement and casing are still the same, as Huffer mentioned. I didn't say the suffix was unimportant.

Not huffy, scoffy.
And yeah, there really isn't much, if any, difference between the 255 and 257 shortblocks. :p

Sure there is - AVCS.
I think there's one other difference.

Since when is AVCS in the shortblock?

Since when was it all about the shortblock?
Sarra

Since the "EJ25" or "EJ22" is stamped in the block, and not on the head.

Thank you. I'm talking about the whole code, not just what's stamped on the block.
