why don't many people go for it? all it takes is some experience and you can make your own tunable ECU for around $250-$400. That sounds like a good deal to me. Have some people done it and have had bad experiences or something? I'm askings for an honest reason. Or have not many guys done it or something. I mean, i see a few guys on NASIOC that have them and are happy with them. But thats them and their flaming community. doesn't change that it is a good product.
1) nolonger an electric speedlimiter, as fast as the trans can handle.
2) able to run high or low impendance injectors
3) Control over the fuel/ignition maps
4) able to take complete advantage of modifications that are applied.
5) very versitile with other parts, like a MSD 6AL with a soft rev revlimiter

I suppose not that many people need or want that much adjustability. Most of us just want a reliable car that works, with A/C, stereo, ... It doesn't take MS for that.
However, in the 'tuning' communities MegaSquirt is used quite often, along with VEMS.
My friend installed one on his car and I helped him a little. Now that's fine for his car (a 1991 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 16V - boxer engine) where the ECU controls just the engine - so he can still use it as a daily driver.
Anyway, we're going to convert a carburated motorcycle to EFI using MS2-Extra and some other bikes throttle bodies + injectors - that should be fun!

PS: I love wagons...

hmm, then mabye incorperating the main ECU as a piggyback to the MS ECU to only function the interior where as the MS controls the engine. Of course, this is annoying because that would entail alot of different problem solving ventures to be able to set it up so the stock ECU doesn't try to throw a check engine light (or CEL). well, i'm willing to do the wet work, i just need to buy a manual so i can start planning out the wiring harnesses that will be made. mabye once i figure this stuff out, i can write up a DIY on this, which would be very bad ass. from there, someone will probably end up linking it to the DIYautotune.com site where it can be filed into there small archive of MS DIY's.
yeah, the wagon hater quip is from a argument i hate with this retardacon. basically, he has a fail wagon. SUBS in the back, a good engine in the front in which he put in, but is modifying it all wrong. OH and its an early 90's american escort wagon thats FWD. he put in a probe GT's 2.5L v6. KLZE engine. i dont have a problem with the engine, just him. the engine is pretty awesome. its a mazda engine that is tuned stock around the basis of the miller cycle. so boosting would reap much rewards. but he chooses to try to make power with it going N/A? In my oppinion, he is FAIL. Furthermore, due to the wagons length and weight distribution, sticking with the FWD drivetrain is FAIL. not like the MX3 which shares the same drivetrain, but has far better handling characteristics.
so for jeremy hine, he is:

Yeah, I know a couple of people that have used it with good success (like on an F/I Miata, FC RX-7)... It's a pretty barebones standalone, which is what makes it so easy to tune, but doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles something like Autotronic or Hydra or something may have.
If it's for a project car and NOT a daily driver, I think it suits its purpose wonderfully.
