You're off to a great start there! That is a clean engine bay. Were the sideskirts and lips already painted when you got it? And is that the stock spoiler? It looks taller than normal.

I'd redo that interior trim. Black w/ white w/ internal woodgrain? Not my style.

It's not white, it's silver. however, the woodgrain underneath is a little tacky. The previous owners idea. But yeah, about the timing belt, i just got that changed so now i'm a good 60k away from doing that again. at least.

here's a quick update on what's been going on with my 2.5GT

first off: here's a pic of the engine bay as it sits now, i used the piping from my weapon R intake and painted it w/black high temp paint, then hooked it up to a stock airbox that i got from dplancia with a 3" fernco coupler and reducer from the weapon R kit. I also got new 3/8" vacuum lines on ebay. also the new cusco strut brace is visible.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/03/enginebay-1.jpg

i also fabricated a bracket for my front license plate (since it's requred by law in WA) made from some 1" aluminum plate, bent into an L shape. no bumper drilling necessary. :)

just got done doing work for this weekend, pulled off a heat shield underneath the car that was rattling, and painted the brake calipers. here's how it turned out.

painted calipers

up on jackstands for the first time! (by far the biggest wheel gap you'll ever see on my car)

we took some time to paint the calipers on my dad's m roadster while we were at it

a few more shots of the M https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/03/IMG_3722-1.jpg

what an amazing automobile, by far the most responsive thing i've ever driven (dinan stage II suspension w/ koni adjustable shocks)

I just filled up my 5MT with Redline MT90, the rear diff is now running mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90. I also took apart my clutch slave cylinder and lubed the piston to help cure my clutch "creak", when i finished with that i bleed the clutch system with synthetic DOT 3 fluid.

I'm toying around with my intake again, and possibly coming up with a use for the snorkus, updates soon to come. Thanks for looking.!!

Quick teaser update.

Just got back from Humboldt County in Northern California for the second year in a row with the GT, the car did great and i averaged about 28.5 MPG which is awesome since i wasn't exactly going slow... 68K on the clock now.
Here are some pics from the trip:

So we left at 6:00 am for the ~15 hour drive and it ended up snowing the whole way out of Seattle almost down to Portland. I saw at least (not an exaggeration) 35 cars on the side of the road, up to 10 at once in the median.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/02/medianwrecks-1.jpg

Stopped at a nice rest stop about 40 miles north of vancouver, This is considered a lot of snow for here, ironically it didn't feel like much since we had the biggest winter storm in a decade here this december.

In Wisconsin, when it snows real bad the plows only focus on one lane of the high way, so the result is one clean lane with a bunch of mini-vans and fwd cars, and one lane with packed up snow and trucks. We drive my outback and my g/f's lsi in the snow lane, SPLASH CARS! Guys in trucks laugh at my little subbie goin' 60mph in the snow, ROCKSTEADY!! Just watch out for other cars sliding. NICERIDE.

99gtlimited

Small update: valve cover on RH side is leaking again.... gonna have to replace the gasket again and use a bunch of gasket maker to help it seal better this time. The weather has been very strange here the last month or two, beautiful day today, after a mini-blizzard last night. Just another reason i love my car, not having to worry about the unpredictable weather we have in the Pacific Northwest.

On to the car stuff:

Here's a shot of the BD w/ the projectors and fogs on, i'll get a night shot when i get a chance. Man is the light output better with these than the stockers!!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_4022-2.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_4024-2.jpg

I also recently got a '07 WRX leather shift knob for cheap that I love. So much better for dealing with the extreme temperatures than the aluminum was. The trim accent is not actually white it's silver, it just has a lot of glare in the picture.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_4026-2.jpg

And here's a back end shot showing off the new sticker i put on the rear windshield to represent my friend Adam's shop up here in Bellingham. He's a true subaru guru if i've ever met one (shameless plug). Here's a link to his shop website if anyone is interested : http://www.nwrallysports.com/index.html

Looks good man, I like the fogs and projectors a lot.

That shift knob is seriously the best OEM 5-speed knob I've ever felt. It hardly gets hot, hardly gets cold and gives great grip. Good choice :smt023

You have no idea how jealous I am of you. And you've pretty much modded your car in the exact way I would. Only thing different I would do would be add some JDM fogs and lamin-x them yellow.

Don't ever let go of that 99 Limited 5spd. If you do you better let me know. I'd be willing to drive all the way accross the country to pick it up

99gtlimited
03-22-2009, 10:45 PM
yeah i've debated JDM fogs but i kinda like the contrast in shape that the combo of the JDM projectors and USD fogs have at night. One of them has a nice huge crack in the top that i've resealed twice now, so if it keeps taking water i may be in the market for a new set sometime soon.

cman7- thanks for the comments, I don't plan on selling it... ever. once I have another car or just more money i'm hopefully gonna swap in a ej207 and make the car a dedicated racing vehicle.

legacy89- you can't be too upset with living there, there's certainly nothing like norwegian women!! :smt047 :smt047 and i'm sure you have better healthcare...

dplancencia - i think it's definitely the best OEM shift knob, i love the feel!

Hey, loving the limited silver legacy! I have followed this thread from its inception, its a great little story!
One question, how did you source/find that shift knob? I really like the style and simplicity of it, and it sounds as though it feels really nice! Any information on that would be greatly appreciated.

Keep up with the mods and rallying, and the updates, wish you the best of the luck with that beast!

99gtlimited

99gtlimited
04-05-2009, 12:10 AM
yeah I want to find a nice OEM rim that i can paint and put some summer tires on. Ideally some 10 spoke 17" wrx wheels but i'm still looking for a good set. Money is tight right now so i can't just go spend $500 + on wheels and tires when i don't actually need them. There are a few smaller things i'll deal with first and maybe over the summer a good set of wheels will show up.

quick update!!

Yesterday I picked up some new wheels/tires for my BD. They are 17" wheels from the saab 9-2x Aero, made by enkei. 55 offset. They still have the Saab centercaps which will need to be changed, but still have good rubber. The wheels/tires only have 15K on them, and i got a great deal.

Let me know what you think...

Car looks fantastic. Very clean. Although, one thing I'm curious about is how high the car appears to sit after the struts and springs are on. Did you use spacers somewhere or is that just the way it is? Doesn't look bad or anything so don't think I'm bad-mouthing. :) I just used to have H&Rs on my '99 LGTL 5MT and it sat much lower than yours from what I remember.

99gtlimited
08-20-2009, 07:02 PM
the last picture the car just appears a little higher since it just came off the jack and hasn't settled again. It does sit lower than that if you look at the pictures taken behind my school. I didn't use any spacers, though I'm most likely gonna put some in the back at some point just to even out the stance a little.

eekay
08-21-2009, 01:25 PM
Ah. Okay. That certainly explains it. The stance looks pretty good now but some very thin spacers in the back couldn't hurt. Would certainly make it look a bit more aggressive.

99gtlimited
08-21-2009, 04:28 PM

I'd like to slightly roll my fenders too. I don't know anyone with a roller though and I figure paying $250-$300 for one and using it once is kind of bleh. Maybe I'll find someone with a roller in the near future...

I never had any issues with my intake. What's risky about it? Are you planning on doing something extreme or different?

I've never had any problems... It spent me about a week "rattle proofing" it, but that was just cause i didn't want to be annoyed, not because of performance. If you keep your fender liners in you really don't have a very high risk when doing it, just don't make it end 6" off the ground where it could end up underwater in extreme puddles....

well I live in Seattle, WA where it rains nearly 2/3 of the days of the year. I've run this thing year round and never had a problem. This doesn't guarantee you won't screw up your car, since it ultimately depends on the skill of the driver, but if you don't go smashing puddles or driving through over a foot of water you should be fine.

I wouldn't go any lower than maybe 1.8" front and 1.5" rear unless you plan on rolling your fenders a bit. Good products I can recommend are, of course, H&R, iON Performance and Bilstein just to name a few. Look around online and you're sure to run into some decent deals.

Here are the Google results for the H&R springs that will fit your '97 BD chassis:
http://www.google.com/search?q=h%26r+springs+HR-29868

iON Performances' website seems to have been re-designed recently and the links aren't work. So, you can contact them with questions here:
http://www.ionperformance.com/contact.html

Bilsteins can be found all over the place. Unfortunately, they are hard to find brand new. But, if you find some for your car, they're pretty darn decent.

Good luck!

I got my struts on eBay, the springs from a member on here, and the tophats from subaruwrxparts.com.

I would recommend searching the forum for more info, there is plenty on here, and many of your questions will have already been asked and answered (more than once at times) in other threads.

Suspension modding isn't exactly cheap, and going with the most inexpensive products isn't gonna be the way to go either, so make sure you know what you're getting into when you say you want to lower your car. If your stock struts are still ok, you can just get lowering spring and put them on the stock struts for now, and upgrade the struts when needed in the future.

The search function will be very good to you... and many people will appreciate not having the forums clogged up with threads about topics that have been covered multiple times.

Hey, I was wondering if you dropped your car on H&R springs, why did you get new KYB struts? Couldn't you just use your stock struts and get 99 LGT H&R springs?

99gtlimited
12-23-2009, 01:32 AM
The stock struts were blown from previous lowering springs, so I replaced them. It's not necessary by any means, but if you have blown struts it is a good idea.

They KYB's are also said to be about 15% stiffer than OEM, which is another reason why people choose them instead of direct OEM replacements.

No sound clip yet... sorry. I've only had my cell phone for taking pictures the last couple months and I just tonight took most of them off.

Here's a few new things going on with the BD:

Installed a eBay Catch Can today, had to make a bracket to mount it well enough but the install was easy.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/12/ccinstalled-1.jpg

I also decided to try the Spring Boosters that 2.5GT installed in his BD to help cure H&R's slight butt sag problem. Haven't driven with them yet so I'm not completely sure how I feel about them, but they do raise the rear quite nicely. I used some clear RTV silicone (because that's what was laying around, any adhesive should work) on the bottom of each to hopefully keep it in place if the spring becomes fully unloaded (when i jack the car up... or catch air  ).

To be honest, I haven't noticed any difference in ride quality or handling (good or bad) using the spacers. They seem to do a good job of lifting the back and are really cheap and easy to install, so I'd say they're well worth the $7 I paid for them.

Question: Since you have aftermarket exhaust except for the cat (right?), have you had any po420 CEL o2 codes from the high flow? If not, I might put my stock cat back in my header, stromung high flow cat (with code preventing o2 spacer), mid-pipe, and axle-back set up that has popped the CEL

IIRC, The flanges don't meet up on the Legacy's mid-pipe and the Impreza's axle back

99gtlimited
12-27-2009, 06:28 PM
yeah the flange needs to be rotated, and the 2 of the hangers need to be moved/modified

I haven't had any CEL or other issues since installation. I don't have a high flow cat or a trackpipe which usually is the cause for that CEL

Nice custom midpipe. How much did that cost if you don't mind I ask? I'm interest in getting this done. Better flow? Since the factory midpipe has two resonator.

it was about $300 to make a custom 2.25" midpipe (aluminized steel) with a resonator with flanges, gaskets, hangers, along with the modification to the axleback, and installation.

It certainly has increased flow, mainly because of the increased diameter, but also because the new pipe has fewer bends and turns than stock.

I'm very pleased with the results, it sounds great, not too loud, and I can really feel the difference in low-end torque. The car also seems to pull better all around from 2-5K.

Update!

got some DEI Exhaust wrap and silicone coating so i went to work!

I decided to coat the entire header first, for added heat retention, then wrap it, then coat it again. Got the coating and wrapping done over the past two days, should have the final coating and installation done tomorrow.... and maybe a sound clip if i have a camera that can do it justice.

DEI Spray is awesome, highly recommended, works on wrap, exhaust pipes, engine blocks, anything you want to retain heat.

01-19-2010, 04:58 PM
The wrap looks great! Can you explain the difference in sound maybe? Does the faint "rattling" noise that Subaru's are known for go away at all? I've been planning on doing this for a while myself but wasn't sure which way I wanted to go as far as the wrap and coating. Thanks for the info!

99gtlimited
01-19-2010, 05:25 PM
yeah no more ticking or rattling. The borla knock-offs are thin-walled and you can hear valvetrain chatter through them without the wrap. The wrap made the exhaust slightly quieter in the cabin, but also made it sound much cleaner with a deeper tone. hard to put into words but certainly worth it, don't forget the silicone coating! I used almost two cans coating the manifold, and the wrap being while very liberal with it.

So I have an update for everyone's viewing pleasure. I've been really busy at school lately, but it has also had its perks. In my time between classes I managed to do a DIY JDM style grill by modifying my stock grill that has been laying around. It turned out pretty well considering time constraints, and a few other small issues. I was originally going to use fiberglass to reinforce the grill but ended up bonding in pieces of ABS instead. Then after many coats of bondo, primer, and paint, it was done! And best of all, the entire project didn't cost me a dime! Absolutely free! :smt023 Here are a few pics of the process.

Here's what it looked like at the start.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/04/IMG_4708-1.jpg

Cut out vertical sections with cut-off wheel on a die grinder. Then ground them down with a sanding wheel. I recommend a mask for this as it creates a lot of dust and horribly smelling burning ABS.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/04/0402000125-1.jpg

Then masked chrome trim, badge area. Then I bonded in ABS pieces using bondo or ABS cement.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/04/0404000207-1.jpg

File, sand, more bondo, more filing, more sanding.... Spray primer in even coat. Spray paint in light even coats (I did 5 coats of black).

Finished Product (minus Subaru Badge)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/04/0409002121-1.jpg

I'll post some pics of it installed when I get a chance, hopefully with a badge.

I also recently received my light bar from lincolnlock (Sam), he came by on the way home from work to drop it off. I installed it withe the JDM L7 grill off since it would need to be shimmed for proper fitment. The bar should look good with my new DIY grill and 4 hella 500's!

Update:

Installed Rallitek 19-22mm Adjustable Rear Sway Bar yesterday, set it to the stiffest setting. First Impressions: I freaking love it! car handles so much better, rear end really pushes the car around the corners now. The bar came w/endlinks and poly bushings.

The bar is for a WRX technically, and required modification of the "bump" on the spare tire well. Here are a few pics showing the process. I ended up using a cut-off wheel to remove the bump instead of trying to dent it in, it is made of metal and didn't want to dent too easily.

Rallitek. 160 shipped w/ endlinks. It's only sure fit if you cut out the bump in the spare tire well.

Nice. I'll order mine from them then. Thanks. And the bump is of no concern to me. Should only take a few moments with a diamond grinder. :)

What's the deal with the weird looking endlinks?

99gtlimited
04-26-2010, 01:07 PM
Define weird... The're just the rallitek c style rear endlinks.

Reason

I guess it's how I am looking at it. Out of all the "C" style links I never seen one like that.

yeah, they're asymmetrical which makes them look a little strange, but they are nice and solid and work great. came w/ poly bushings and everything, I'm rather happy with the deal i got to be honest, well worth the money.

I'm doing that to my boot for sure! Definitely save me money and time finding a thick RSB.

Are you going to have the light bar powered through the main battery or a secondary?

99gtlimited
04-26-2010, 02:35 PM
I'm not entirely sure yet, I don't even have the lights for it yet. I'll most likely run it off the main one at first and see how my battery and alternator handle it. I live in the city, so the bar won't get that much use, only on long road trips and light off-road use, It's really more for show at this point...

UPDATE!!
The BD just rolled 80,000 miles...

Also,
Got an '03 WRX MOMO steering wheel from a local for quite the deal. Only took me about 45 min to install it, 25 of which was spent trying to get the airbag connector off the old wheel. I swapped over cruise control from my old wheel so It's all plug and play now!

So.... an update:

What do you mean by (air quote) "project"? Just a rebuild or a swap?

99gtlimited
07-06-2010, 11:33 PM
most likely just a rebuild for now, might go with a few new parts: clutch, lightweight flywheel, possibly cams...

gonna stay N/A for now, but I do plan on swapping this thing later, when I have the coin.

Reason

You will like cams...

You will like cams...

Well I know that...

But it's more of a money issue. I just graduated college and don't exactly have a fortune lying around to play with. I'm going to do my best to do some kind of upgrades while I'm in there, but I'm on a small budget, so the extra $$$ for cams might not be possible.

I am however, looking for deals on a new clutch and maybe a lightweight flywheel.

Bump this one up from the grave!

Everyone likes Pics! Here's what I've been up during the past 6 months (since I haven't been on the forum much during that time)

Engine is running, like a champ. Got the heads machined, a valve job, and cleaned the top of each piston before reassembling the motor. Not to mention the nice new Head Gaskets!

And here are a few pictures of my latest "project", which is actually my new job. In December, I was hired at Todd Pacific Shipyards, on Elliot Bay in Seattle. I'm an Engineer contracted to help with the new construction projects in the shipyard, which just so happen to be Ferries for the Washington State Ferries system. There is also a lot of ship repair, on both civil and naval vessels done at the yard.

Welcome, The Elements! What issues are you having with understanding the interface of the site? You should be able to just click the "img" link when you post and place any URL to pictures you'd like. Does that make sense? You also might want to take a look at how to use BBCode on this site: http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/faq.php?mode=bbcode.
