I have a 99 legacy bk6 (according to vin). there is a weird "weeerrring" sound coming from the rear end. it almost sounds like on a bicycle when the rim slightly rubs against the brake pad. making a slight rubbing sound.

i checked all the tires and all have even wear. no signs of rubbing. what could it be. any type of bearing or anything that could be known to go bad.

rust buildup on the rear rotors is a common cause for a sound like this. Also a bad wheel bearing. right rear ones tend to go bad often in subaru's, not sure why, but they do. Proper tire inflation is another thing (but you checked that) also tire type. Some tires tend to get noisy after they are worn. I have these crappy nexens on my A4 that are stupid loud now. Luckily that car gets a new set this spring.

Check your rear diff oil too. Pretty rare that a subie diff goes bad, but it happens.

Add to the above a dragging e-brake as a possibility.

I get a weird sound from my rear end whenever I've eaten chili.
