issue with coolant? high temp?

issue with coolant? i had mud all over my engine compartment from work. ( work a construction site) so i power housed off the engine while it was running. then i drove to my friends house 15 mins down rd. his father noticed i was leaking some coolant. i said oh probably cause i sprayed the hell out of my engine. went to drive home after about 45 mins. my needle raced to h. i coasted back to his house and filled her up with coolant. before i filled her up i noticed that the hose to the overflow tank was sucking in air.... the needle dropped back to normal operating temp when i started. drove home fine. opened hood found that the overflow tank lost about 1/2 of its fill. im thinking that the radiator just sucked up what was air in it. but now it seems like im slightly burning coolant. i can see it smoking slightly under the overflow tank...

any ideas?

So can you actually see coolant leaking out from under the car? If so you should find the source - check the radiator hoses or the radiator itself.

my dad said the thermostat probably got stuck close and it the coolant was just overflow. after i refilled it and drove off nothing has changed. temp fine. no leaks. weird huh?

Here is what happened to me.......

I was driving home after dropping my buddy off, where the car idled for about 60 seconds. (It had been running atleast 25 minutes before that) I drove about 200 yards when the coolant temp started to rise about 5mm on the guage. It has never moved about the "normal spot" ever...... I asked my mothers new husband, who runs a local Subaru shop, and he confirmed what I thought it was. An Air bubble. However, he said that the air bubble was more than likly caused by the driverside HEADGASKET!!! He noted that it is often hard to see the "weeping" from the head due to the fact that the spot where the weeping occurs is directly over the exhaust, evaporating/burning all evidence.
