I keeping reading posts and people are referring to open and closed deck, whats does that mean?

A closed deck is where the engine block surrounding the piston cylinder is solid metal (or pretty much).
An open deck is where the cylinder walls have a gap around them.
A semi-closed/open deck is where there is SOME empty space surrounding the piston cylinders.
