View Full Version : Fuel gauge issue

Search didn't turn up anything, so I'm assuming this is a rare problem with these cars. The fuel gauge in my '90 Leggy has recently started an intermittent problem: sometimes when it's idling, like at a stop light, the needle will drop to completely empty regardless of how full it is. As soon as you take off, it SLOWLY rises back to where it belongs. Doesn't happen all the time, but pretty weird when it does. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Most likely the in-tank sensor?
yeah, should have a float in the tank, sometimes they get stuck, when you move and the gasoline starts sloshing around it allows it to move. I've had that issue in vehicles before.

My 95 impreza did that once.. when I first got it I was warned it would float a bunch.. blah blah.. however 3 years later it got worst it would drop to E then sometimes come half way up then drop again or then go back to whatever level was in the tank... I could of replaced the fuel sender to the newer type which did not float as much (newer one takes readings over a set time limit) Or just deal with it..

Take the fuel pump out and check the contact points on the sensor. It is a very easy process. I had to replace the fuel pump on my 92 SS and it took no more than 20 mins for the whole job. Try not to drop anything in the gas tank when the pump is out. Clean the surround area before you remove it.....if you do it.

Do you have to make sure you release the pressure first?

I'm not sure, but I did it to play it safe, theres nothing wrong with doing it safe.
