So this morning on my way home from work, I work 7pm-7am, it was VERY FREAKING COLD. Anyways, I'm getting on the offramp of the freeway where I live and hear BOOM. I look back to see my rear window is shattered. No impact points where anything would of hit it, just a shattered window. Only thing I can think of is it was something temperature/wind related. The strange thing is I was moving forward when it happened making a turn where it would be impossible for another vehicle to have thrown a rock or anything and hit it. It could not have been due to impact of any kind. Needless to say, I wasn't a very happy camper. Don't know yet if SOA is going to warranty it, but I had to order the window from the dealership regardless... to the tuned of 400+ dollars. Just needed to vent.

I'm guessing it was the temps + chassis/body flex that caused it to shatter, considering you were going around a corner.

How hard did you take said corner?

not hard at all... maybe 35, not speeding at all. Everything was coated in a layer of ice, including the window, that may have something to do with it as well. Last night it was mysting rain and then the temp dropped about 25 degrees in an hour and left a half inch thick layer of ice on everything... it was a nasty morning where I was glad to have AWD.

yes, rear defroster had been on for a little while.

in tempered glass the inner protion of the glass is in tension and the surfaces is in compression. When heat is applied to one surface of the glass it heats up the one side expanding the glass on the inside first this causes instability in the glass causing it to shatter. My buddy had this happen on his GTI, but then again the VW's are known for faulty wiring :)

The same thing happens when you wash a car with warm water on a very cold day, the sudden expansion of the glass causes it to shatter. I only broke one windshield this way at the autobody shop.

Same thing happened to my windshield, except it didn't shatter, it jsut formed a crack the whole way across it. It sucks, sorry man.

it didn't explode or implode, just shattered the entire thing, every square inch of the glass. After it happened and I pulled off, i got out and shut my door, not thinking, and then a large bit right above the wiper assembly fell into the cargo area, but initially, it didn't explode out or implode in.

SOA and the dealership have both decided to NOT honor their warranties, which I will deal with later, but my insurance company has stepped up and agreed that it is a 100% value replacement on my policy, meaning i won't hve to pay a dime. The glass has been ordered and should be here monday afternoon.

Considering the car is probably close to 6 years old, why would there be a warranty on the glass?

Or does glass fall under some other category?

when I purchased the car I purchased an extended warranty through subaru of america, not to mention the original 90 warranty through the dealership, which should also be in affect. Nowhere in either warranty does it say glass, or anything for that matter, are not covered. If in fact the break was due to faulty rear defrosting strips as was mentioned above by someone, then that is an electrical issue that most definitely should be covered. Regardless, I purchased the extended warranty that should cover this no matter.
