will a 2005 STi axleback fit on a 2002 Legacy with minor mods (moving hangers)?
would it be worth it do that if i found one (say for less than $75)? (id also get my exhaust guy to make me a new 2.25" center pipe)
im looking to get some good sound and a little performance out of my 02 without having to dish out a lot of money.

A new flange yes, new piping, no. You talking about a midpipe?

hanger movement and a longer midpipe and it will fit. for $75 plug parts and labor, I'd think it would be worth it.

what i mean is say for example i found something like this at a junk yard
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WRX-STi- ... enameZWDVW (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WRX-STi-Stock-Exhaust_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33630QQihZ009QQitemZ190194458408QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)
and i decided to just take the muffler end (removing the excess piping that doesnt work on the legacy) and put it on my ride. i know i can get a midpipe made, possibly just have it welded right to the end of muffler (removing the excess piping that came with sti muffler). do you guys think thatll work?

I'd say grab the midpipe - it's stainless steel and includes a resonator.

I had an STI exhasut on my car. For me it was woth it because I did all the modifications to it. But it will cost $$$ if you have it modified to fit your car.

He's talking about a BE, not a BD.

From everything I hear, it should be cheaper on a BE. Saying it'll cost $$ is relative - for what you'd pay for a custom stainless steel exhaust system with mandrel bends and stock quality, you could pay a ton more.

I also have an STI axleback with stock piping and I like the way it sounds. Of course, I have the Cobb/Stromung axleback sitting in my shed waiting to be put on but that's just cause I am an ass who likes to spend money. I say go for it. Cheap, looks good and the sound is nice and mellow.
