changing front brake rotors and pads

any one got a DIY for changing front brake pads and rotors?? let me know!

Topic moved. I don't think there's ever been a DIY for replacing brakes, it's supposed to be extremely straightforward.

I can give you a couple of steps though:

1. Lift car
2. Put on Jackstands, not just a floor jack
3. Remove wheel
4. Spray lots of WD-40 or PB-Blaster (or other lubricant) all over everything repeatedly and wait some period of time.

Pads are easy. Pull the wheel, pull the 1 or 2 bolts holding the caliper to the bracket, pull the caliper. The pads will just slide out.

Next, to get the rotor off, remove the two bolts holding the bracket, then you can pull the bracket and rotors.

Reverse to install new rotors and pads.

you will have one bolt on the caliper that you can take out, the other will be a slide pin. unbolt the one, and unbolt the bracket from the hub (2 more bolts, 14mm i think)

the rotor should come off with just a little force... if you need to, screw something into the 2 holes and pull on that, or just whack it if you are replacing the rotor.

Remove the brake fluid cap under the hood...

use the old brake pads and a C Clamp to compress the pistons in the caliper..

replace the pads and rotor... just make sure you keep the metal retaining clips on the pads.

bleed the brakes, starting at the rear psgr, then d.rear, f. Psgr, f.drivers

go break in your brakes!!!

(do a few 20mph, and one or two from 50) (keep it off busy roads.)

let the car sit until the brakes are cooled off (use the brakes as little as possible after the 50mph, to avoid creating hotspots on the rotor)

all done!!!

You know why it's recommended that you bleed brakes every 30,000 miles, right? Moisture. As long as you have everything apart, it makes no sense not to bleed brakes. It's not like brake fluid costs a lot.

yeah i know it's that i just changed the fluid when i had the rear rotors and pads replaced. i don't want to pay for the fronts to be put in, so i'm gonna do them myself. i understand it is an easy an convenient time, however, i'd rather not have to bleed the brakes as they have been done within the last 2K. i was planning on just doing the switch and bleeding them later or if i have any problems. sound good?

Just remember to open the brake fluid reservoir lid and use a c-clamp to compress the pistons in before you put in your new pads. You shouldn't need new fluid then.

Though changing the fluid is an easy process too (perhaps easier than the brake pads), just need a 2nd person to pump the pedal if you don't have one of those helpers (speedbleeders, pressure bleeders - they're all about $40 and well-worth the price if you DIY the fluid).

yeah i know about uncapping the reservoir so it doesn't get pressurized or overflow. i'm just gonna try this without bleeding the brakes, then we'll see how it goes.

Good shit, I have the same setup. Just remember to wear gloves and have a can of brake cleaner also

completed this weekend. what a difference!! hawk pads grip extra well and the new brembo's are great.

the only rough spot was the two 17mm bolts that held the rotor in place, had to pound on a wrench with a hammer to get them to budge.
