How can I get a good boxer rumble out of the engine?

I'd like to get a deep, rich rumble out of the car. I've got a 1 and a half year old EJ25 engine in the car and I'd like to take care of it, but I really, REALLY like the rumble that some modded Subaru engines have.

I'm obviously not swapping out my engine, so what steps can I take to get a deeper tone? Note: I'm not looking for LOUD, just deep and rich.

What are the usual steps?

unequal length header, and exhast. thats all there is too it.

how loud do you want? My car had the borla knockoffs ( a must for the sound), and basically 2 resonators. No cats, no mufflers. It was BADASS, and it was LOUD! I loved it, and I'd do it again in a second if I had another NA car.

If you want to keep it quieter, Get the borla knock-offs, keep the stock front cat pipe, and then do 2.25in all the way back, through some muffler.

Hopefully it sounds good and holds together well. 30 bucks total for the whole thing would be a hell of a deal, but if it turns out bunk, I'm just gonna go scooby-scoopin at the local junk yards and try to find a mashed up sti or something. I had a buddy find a practically brand new borla exhaust (cat back) that was undamaged after a pretty bad accident for his car at a junk yard for 12 bucks for the whole line.

definately. I'm gonna wait a couple weeks on the headers and I've currently got a leaky oil pan gasket and supposedly faulty knock sensor, so those issues are being addressed first, but I already ordered the muffler and a flowmonster high flow cat to have the line built for me. I have a guy nearby who manages an exhaust shop. Last time I took something to him it was the celica, and they had to custom bend the entire line and weld everything up and he only charged me about 300 for everything, headers-back. Hopefully since I'm just taking him a cat and muffler I can get a cheaper cat back system done and retain the mount for the headers to connect to the pipe behind the cat.

hopefully I'll have a sound clip up in a week or two. Just keep in mind it'll be sans-aftermarket uel headers.

I have a resonated midpipe that is internal diameter 2.25". I have an STi axleback that is ID 2.5" with a 3" tip. Has a nice deep tone. All up $185 fitted.

i have a muffler like that, but i am using oem piping, The sound isnt loud or quiet, it rumbles more than enough to know that it is a subaru but nothing that would set off alarms.

Doesn't matter - has no effect on engine sound.

Theres no sound difference in auto or manual shifting just lack of sound because your foot is off the gas. If you want the "cool" factor of having a manual take your foot off the gas when you auto tranny shifts, and the rest of us can laugh at you for trying too hard lol

Thats why i changed my exhaust lol
