Bad clutch and flywheel are also symptoms of a bad transmission (since they're part of said transmission).

If your grinding all gears, first check your clutch fluid, second check out the pressure plate and throw out bearings, third, make sure you don't have a glazed clutch. fourth, put in a bigger clutch.

Oh, don't forget missing gears. Putting it in second and having no power get to the wheels is a big indication.

Thanks.......
This is all good stuff. Unfortunately I fear that I have some of these symptoms and I will be looking into a new one. :sad5:
But I think I'll drive it s far as it will take me.
Is there a "better" replacement tranny I should use? (stronger, faster, etc)
Or should I just get a remanufactured?

you could get a jdm wrx v1-4 tranny and rear diff for around $1200 (v1/2 4.11 final drive, v3/4 4.44 final drive) and have a limited slip in the rear.
or a used jdm tranny for $550 2wd +$150 For 4wd http://www.nadauto.com/transmissionsubaru.asp
