I have spent time looking around the forum for peoples ideas about whether the Stromung ($330) or SPT ($200) muffler is the better. I havent been able to figure out from examining these previous posts.
I have BE and Im curious to know how they differ in performance and aesthetics.
Thanks

If you want a slight upgrade from stock get SPT. If you want a better sport muffler go Stromung.
battman has a Stromung/Cobb catback for his BE. I don't know if it's installed yet. It's a pretty thing through.
SPT is made by Bosal, IIRC, so it should be a well-made unit also.

I had an SPT muffler for a short time. It is made well, but not a huge power difference muffler. You will get a little more sound from up at WOT.

Hooker aerochamber ftw. I just fixed my timing, apparently one of my cams was off one tooth. Car sounds amazing. I'll get a new sound clip soon.

SPT is stock diameter, Stromung is 2.25" which means it's an "upgrade" and it's also going to be a touch louder than the SPT, which is only slightly louder than stock.
Stromung ,or look at getting a custom job for way less...

I have a Stromung and Borla headers just like dplacencia, and I couldn't agree more, it sounds just amazing.

awesome thanks for all the feedback. i think the general opinion is that the stromung is better. sweet i know what ill be getting in the very near future.
looking through all these websites that sell car parts for our cars, they always seem to be selling custom/replacement exhaust hangers. what are the benefits of using these? less vibration?
They're stiffer, and some of them are longer, so they allow you to fit mufllers that are just a little too big. I need to get some of the Kartboy extended ones for my Fujitsubo.

does the Stromung sound nice? last time I heard it, it was a bit on the raspy side.

Here's why I say aerochamber....
http://media.putfile.com/Subaru-Legacy- ... erochamber (http://media.putfile.com/Subaru-Legacy-custom-exhaust-hooker-aerochamber)
Plus it's only a $60 muffler, no drone inside the car (even in a wagon). I just love it.

i like what the hooker has to offer. how did you go about pickin out a tip?

No tip on it right now. Because I didn't have the money, and the guy welding said he wasn't comfortable with welding stainless to aluminized steel. So it's just some piping. I do plan to go with a summitracing stainless steel tip at some point in the summer. They run about $20-30

I like my SPT wicked! At idle.. it sounds almost stock.. when you get on it.. it sounds SICK and deep! Not too annoyingly loud like the stromung probably is.. but very good. I'd go with the SPT, since its an actual 'subaru' part, and sounds really good. If you got a exhaust ticket.. you can always claim its a stock part.. and when you sell the car... as well.

I have finally installed my Cobb/Stromung and I have to say it's awesome. Nice rumble, no raspiness. I will see what I can do to get a decent sound clip.

Don't say that if you don't know what they sound like. The Stromung is a very nice piece and it's better than the SPT. There's no gains from the SPT. All it is, is chrome and has a larger tip.

I'm telling you people think I have a swap. My car sound like a WRX. I just love the rumble it makes.

I'm doing the same. Going to order a stromung exhaust + borla headers then have a custom midpipe made.
Just one question though, since my car has two 02 sensors, one will be in the stock cat, then where does the other one go? on the new midpipe?
Also, where did you guys order your stromung exhausts from ?

There are two bungs on the cat section, one before the cat and one after.

boxer4racing has stromung. i love mine. sounds awesome. i agree with reason. even if i change the cat to aftermarket, random tech, the 2 bungs are there in the cat section, not midpipe.

Or you could order directly from Stromung and save yourself some money. You save $90 ordering directly from Stromung when you buy the everything for a catback.

i got a borla header, and apexi n1 muffler on mine. coustom pipe from the header back. no cat. no premuffler. kept the cat pipe the same, just has is a coustom made pipe to go from the header to the rear pipe. ppl always look at me since it sounds like it has 400hp, when only have about 180hp.

Uh, you'll have a bit less than that. Stock the engine puts out 165hp at the crank.

Well, I thought about it this way...
The engine puts out 165hp @ 4000rpm at the CRANK.
Then you throw an exhaust on it, and you expect it to make MORE power than what it would make without anything attached? That doesn't make sense.
An improved (better flowing) exhaust will scavenge back lost HP, but it cannot increase the amount of HP created by the engine.
Am I off base?
I guess you could increase the HP@crank by tuning the fuel/air mix, but you'd still be scavenging back HP with the exhaust.

engine= big air pump. the better it flows the more power it can deliver within its limits.

Exactly - and the limit is 165hp crank without increasing the stock parameters. Which would entail some kind of improved tune, or hardware change out. The exhaust is just a restriction to the flow. The most efficient engine will be one that has no exhaust, and no intake restriction (which means no filtration, which means it's "peak" performance longevity will be very limited).

im not going to get into an arguement about something that i guess with my 6yrs car building and 7yrs jet engine mechanic i have no idea about.

Dude I'm not arguing with you  ... if you can show me that a crank 165hp engine will make more power with an exhaust attached, great - I'm all ears and eyes. But to me, it doesn't make sense. :)

the stock spec i.e. hp are for the stock car i.e. stock intake, stock exhaust, stock clutch. stock intakes and exhaust are restrictive. you put on a better flowing intake/exhaust you will them increase hp, but sometime loose tq. it in on how good the after market parts are. yes even changing the clutch setup will effect hp/tq. if you put on something that weights 5-10lbs lighter than the stock you will effect hp/tq and how fast and smooth the eng revs. even wheels will effect hp/tq. example. my stock SR20det. i dyno'd before any mods(factory specs 205hp). i got 190hp(with stock boost 8psi) at the wheels. the only thing i change the next time i dyno'd it was turbo manifold, turbo dumppipe, downpipe, test pipe, than apexi rear pipe. so basiclly full exhaust(still with stock boost 8psi) at the wheels 209HP. do you understand now?

I see this argument on many other forums.
Adding HP or freeing up HP who cares, it's more power. I'll take what I can get!

No, I still don't understand.
If you have a stock engine, sitting on an engine dyno with nothing attached and it makes 165hp, I don't get how if you ADD stuff to it is going to make it produce more power. It's like sticking a small straw onto a larger pipe, the restriction is still a restriction.
Manufacturers do their horsepower specs at the engine - not after the drive and powertrains. If they did that, Subaru would constantly have to advertise their 2.5i's as "120hp". And they wouldn't sell all that well.
Try again?

I'm not arguing - I'm trying to understand the logical (and it is supposed to be a logical one) explanation. I get that you're "adding" or "freeing up" additional power stance - but the question remains - where is this additional power coming from? As previously mentioned, an engine is just a big airpump.

ok. when manufatures do there dyno tests on there eng they do it with the test with the intake and exhaust system that is going to be on the vehicle it is going on. do dyno a stock car with everything stock. then dyno it with and exhaust or intake and see if there isnt any diff.
