How to install a gear knob to MY04 Legacy?

I just brought a aftermarket gear knob for my legacy, but when i went to unscrew the OAM knob it is attched to the leather covering. Do I need to take the console right out just to get the leather covering off the gear stick? Could someone please help me? :oops:

Yes, you need to take the paneling along the center console out. I don't know how similar the BE/BH (considering how Subaru usually does things, probably very) is to my model year (BD/BK), but this might help you out.

Pop open the center console bin, behind the ebrake- there should be a couple screws holding the center console paneling down. take them out, pull the ebrake, and pop the paneling out. Then proceed to the next panel (if it's 2 separate pieces, I'm not sure) and pop it out too. You should be able to remove the shift knob with the whole panel and the leather boot, and then remove the knob from the boot.

If aftermarket, how are you attaching it to the trim piece of console?

yeah, it should be. Depends on the aftermarket knob though.

I just pull up at the back of the trim and then towards the back of the car. Mine's been removed many times and may have broken a tab or two, but it still fits in snug.
