Does anyone have a website that they could recommend me to for Turbo kit for a 97' Legacy? I've been told that a turbo wont mount up to my "American" Engine, but id like asking people who know what they are talking about. thanx -Nick-

Arrrgghh.

If you must go with a turbo kit, I suggest the AVO kit from Rallitek.

However a WRX swap is recommended. There are some good threads on swaps here. Check them out and see what you think.

Ok, short answer above, the kit is $3500 without the labor and can only run 6psi. It is highly not recommended you run turbo on a stock legacy engine.

I wasn't going to say it

The non-turbo factory engines, specifidally the 2.2 Liter end quickly and violently if turbo'd enough to make a difference.

It's honestly more affordable to buy a 2.0 liter wrx engine and get parts for it slowly than it is to buy the kit, grenade the engine, and buy another.

The RalliTek AVO kit is about as 'gentle' as you can get for longevity, and does produce power. That's who I trust, I've seen their build pics of and N/A Baja being converted for turbo duty.

I was thinking about this kit as well...Not looking for a whole bunch of boost or anything just kinda want something simple yet sweet

I flog my cars on a fairly regular basis. I don't think I'd have the self control for the AVO kit to not kaboom my engine.

Actually the 2.5 ends more quickly if applied with forced induction.

If you used a quality kit like the AVO kit, yeah. The phase I EJ22s had forged internals, and a somewhat semi-closed deck. Reddevil has boosted his stock EJ22E with up to 15 PSI at times. Granted, it doesn't last long, but it's not an instant kaboom.

It's really not worth it to do a kit, unless you have a lot of time on your hands and a backyard full of spare engines.

It's not like you need 15 psi. 5-6 would be enough for a nice boost.

Phase 1's (which is what I have) not only have stronger internals ,but also are non interference...

Anyways, Basically, a swap would be more reliable.

Some Phase Is are interference. The revision was in '97, but phase II didn't come until '99.

Mine just hit 90k recently...so if I put forced induction on it = bad idea? I don't even know where the hell to get a WRX engine around here...even if I do it takes forever to get it wired and working correctly right?
Also, I got stuck with an auto so is any of this even worth it, I mean I love my car but swapping out just about every single part is money I don't have...

I would have to completely disagree with the Quickly and violently part, my brother turboed his 96 Impreza about 3? years ago and its his dd. he has ran 15psi for short bursts and around 11-12 daily with a 60 trim turbo. with a Td04 he hit 178whp and 208wtq @ 9psi NO MANAGEMENT.
these 22s are strong engines, I wouldnt think twice about turboing a n/a 2.2l, as long as its intercooled and you run 10psi or under you WILL be safe, granted you have good oil ect.

as for the 2.5l I have a friend who turbod his with great results, he got up on the dyno and made 266wtq and 220whp @ 8psi. thats about exactly what an sti puts down, and with an rs he is lighter.

the bottom line is, dont get the turbo kit, rather just use a turbo kit from a already turbo'd subaru like a wrx or something. keep in mind you will need injectors and a wideband but I would not be too worried about blowing up as long as you be realistic.

as for the 2.5l

you can turbo n/a engines at 6psi max safely most of the time(under 60k miles). once you go past that you have the chance of ruining you engine. 8psi with ruin you pistion, and 10psi+ with blow a hole in your block. expecally these cheap stations ripping you off with your gas. yes the 2.2 are better to turbo because the have a 9.0:1 and 2.5 have 9.5:1
also you can get a wrx motor w/ wiring a ecu, for cheaper that a avo turbo kit and have the same power. and you can do more to the motor later.

plus ive heard avo turbo kits have horribly slow spowl time.

I officially give up on my 2.5L engine. No turbo for me.

Gonna junkyard dive for a 2.2L turbo engine and rebuild it for funzies, IF I can find one.

Still not an intuitive engine swap, as the 2.2L turbo motors were OBD-I and you have an OBD-II car, you will have to do some splicing.

Nah I meant just for no reason basically  maybe sell it I dunno I just always wanted to rebuild one of those things

I don't know who told you this, but the AVO turbo kit has very little lag. Just as you'd expect from a higher comp. turbo'd car. These guys http://www.techworkseng.com/ have quite a few customers that have turbo'd n/a motors that have lasted years under weekend warrior ralleys and drags. These guys: http://japanese-auto.com/ have turbo'd many n/a cars that again have lasted without any problems.

As stated above, its all about being realistic. My 2.5 BH will be turbo'd in a month running 6psi and link EM and I put 2500km a month on my legacy. I have no worries of longevity issues. Too many people have been turboing 2.5rs's for too long for it to be imposible to have a reliable motor. We didnt always have the wrx.

After watching The Fast and the Furious again (I know, that movie is made of fail) I randomly found this kit for the GC8

http://www.importperformanceparts.net/i ... ubaru.html (http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/turbospec_subaru.html)

I know nothing about it...just thought I'd throw it in this topic to see if anyone knows anything about it or anything.

Cheaper than the AVO, but could cause engine 'splosination.

Has there been some success, yes, but where do your ultimate power goals? The 2.5rs boys have been blowing up motors just as good as the Legacy folks. The cost of the AVO kit is prohibitive. If you think once you go turbo you'll just stop and be happy with your power, I will sit here and tell you, that I think you are wrong.

Then look at how old our platform is. BE/BH maybe not so bad, but I'm sure most of you BD folks are into the 100k in mileage.

Paying a bit more money up front, will probably save you more money in the long run, and with less chances of frustration.

I sourced a 2.0 WRX motor with only 3,000 miles, complete turbo, ECU and wiring harness for $3000. You just have to look and be patient. For the price of the kit would you rather have a low mileage WRX motor, or a high mileage legacy NA motor with a turbo kit slapped on it?

Tis true. I slapped myself, I think I'm good now.

But as far as a swap goes for me...I can't even find parts around here. Could be why I keep flip flopping on the turbo issue...

I sourced my engine from E-bay. And if that isn't convenient, I can certainly put you in touch with several Subaru shops that can assist you with that if you are serious.

Really, well thanks for that dude...it may be a few years now though I'm going to dedicate my cash to fixing the body first since it's apparently seen lots of shopping carts. BTW your car is the reason I wanted to turbo mine, and the reason I found the website in the first place. Just a lil' tidbit for ya.
