So it's a little over two weeks since I got the car and the rear main seals are gone. Spits oil pretty bad. Car still runs, but dunno how far or for how long and I keep having to add oil as it goes through a qt in a few days. Anyway, I've decided I'm either getting a new engine put in or having this one rebuilt, but I want to make sure I choose the more reliable solution, and I'm not sure which to go with.
Known issues with the car:
Possibly bad IAC
Knock sensor codes come and go
Misfire
Oil Pan Gasket leak
Rear main seals
jumpy hard starts
sounds like hell
clutch is bad

so I'm wondering, should I have the engine rebuilt or put in a new one? Is there a recommended head gasket upgrade that is more durable? What am I looking at in cost for either decision (typically, not necessarily a quote) and should I take it to a dealer to have them do it or just try to find somebody nearby who works on subarus?

Is there anything else I could have them do when rebuilding it that would protect it better against future issues? I'm pretty pissed so far cause I've had the car for two weeks and I knew about the oil pan gasket leak but didnt notice the rms leak. Shoulda known to look around better when I was picking it up. Got flustered and made a bad decision I guess. Anyway, no sense not fixing it up. Just wanna make sure I get a good reliable car back from the shop.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If it has high miles, I would get a new engine if I could with a nice clutch. Sounds like too many problems to mess with if the engine been around the block a few times.

it's at 140k. I guess I always thought that when they rebuilt an engine that they pretty much took the whole thing apart and everything that needed replaced was replaced.

What do you think I'm looking at pricewise to get a new engine bought and installed?

It might be cheaper than a rebuild. Labor wise a replacement would be easier. What year is it?

also, if I have them put in a new(er) engine should I have them upgrade the headgasket before they install it, or would that pretty much double the cost. I've got 2000 bucks to work with right now and I really dont want to just buy another car and chalk this one up. I like the car a lot, just not too happy about having it crap out on me two weeks after getting it.

Expect to pay around $1800-$1900 for a short block brand new. Includes: Block, Crankshaft & Bearings, Piston & Rings, Connecting Rods & Bearings, And Real Seal.

Yes just buy a set of headgaskets. You will need them in any case of a rebuild or if u swap the block.

what would you guess the whole job should cost for a new engine? Are you saying around 2k for the engine+labor or is that just the block? Couldnt I just order a used engine for around 1k or is that a bad idea? I'm still learning about longblock vs shortblock and what it takes to swap parts for either. Do you think a dealership will completely rape my wallet compared to a local mechanic?

I really only have 2000 for the entire job.

Call your local dealer for estimates and let us know what they tell you.

I have one guy who said 450 for labor. he's looking around for engines right now to see what he can get on one, but he said $1000 for an engine would be too much when I asked about an ebay engine, so it seems like he can get em cheaper. He's doing a headgasket on a 96 lgt right now and owns an SVX.

oh and the price quoted was for an engine swap.
