I have a 2005 Legacy base line model with an AT and 40,000 miles on the clock. After driving a while there is a strange smell that comes in thru the vents. It doesn't happen all the time, but enougn to cause concern. Smelling around the enginge seems to point to the passsenger side of the vehicle near the fire wall. It is a strange oil/rubber/burn smell. It is real bad after I let the car sit for a bit and then start it up again. There are NO fluid leaks. The dealer could not reproduce. OF COURSE!

Also, my estimated MPG indicator is over by about 2.0 mpg. Any way to recalibrate.

does the smell come after driving the car a bit? If so sounds like a leaky front diff oil seal, I had that on my 03 Forester no leaks or anything like that but driving the car hard or harder or faster the smell would come in with the vents and go away when you drove slower.

Not keeping up with the fluid level the Front diff said good bye at a stop light.

A leaky oil filter will dump oil right on the headerpipe. You need to open the inspection cover underneath to look. Did you just get an oil change?

Also, watch your coolant level.
