seems even my stock PS pump(98 Legacy L) is WEAK...the car just requires too much force to turn the steering wheel.

Can I upgrade to one from a 98 Legacy GT ???

it's the same pump.

Change the size of the PS pump pulley if you want more assist.

If it takes force to turn the wheel, there's a problem. First flush the system and refill with fresh ATF. If that doesn't do it, get a rebuild kit for the pump.

Yeah, the stock system works just fine when it's in good condition.

My car started to get harder to turn later in it's life. Parts may just be wearing out and going bad.

I replaced the pump with my 98 Impreza 2.5rs pump....and it STILL is REALLY hard to turn most of the time...

Whata u guys think ??

could the fuild be getting blocked or something ???

how do I drain it all out ??

also... what fluid do you guys use, it says dextron...

oww sound like a bad valve assembly. the teflon seals must be leaking. you could either replace the seals (10/10 difficult) $24 or buy a used or rebuilt rack. ive gotting a quote for $180 rebuilt. i would think it the lines a blocked the pump or belt would be squeling. the fluid you should use is any ATF 3+ (dextron-mircron3, atf4 atf4+, aft5) any of those will work. the only difference is the newer ones have more additives

Or you could buy a light weight power steering pump pulley. I get a newer pump too though, your may be dying.

I'm going to go ahead and order a rebuilt Legacy GT pump...

I would go grab one from my local junkyard... but I'm not sure if it would be worth it...even though It can be had for $25-40...

maybee I'll swing by and see if I can find one that looks"newer" than the rest of the engine parts...

I'mm assuming the my 2.5rs Impreza PS pump just isn't strong enough or whatnot....

im not talking about the pump... im talking about the sector shaft on the rack and pinion.

well the thing is, the system isn't loosing any fluid. The resovoir is past full on the dipstick. Could TOO much fluid cause it ???

it wouldn't show any sign of leaking its a sealed unit. if the Teflon seals are leaking it would make it have no assist or very little in the steering. and just make the fluid go from the high pressure line to the return line. if the next pump you get doesn't fix the problem. the rack would be the next thing to think about. but its so hard to rebuilt you just should buy a rebuilt or used rack

yeah I'm gona go ahead and order a newly rebuilt PS pump. If that doesn't fix it I guess I'll have to replace the rack.

can I use a wrx rack ?

or how much would a rebuilt legacy rack go for ??
