so here in the northeast we got some snow today. i was messing around doing some donuts, first and second gear most of the time. with some pretty high rpm's. however, at one point i came to complete stop to talk to my friend who was there with and upon trying to drive again i couldn't put my car into first at all. something was physically opposing it. it feels like when you shift your car out of fifth and you are blocked from going into reverse. also, second pops out. i try to go but it just grinds and gets me no where. i have to start the car in third and burn the hell out of the clutch to get anywhere. the car is now sitting at my house until i can diagnose the problem. any ideas guys? has this happened to any other legacy drivers or people that you know? i have 2000 legacy L wagon 5mt if that means anything to trying to figure out the problem here. thanks

i would check your shift linkage

Can I access the shift linkage by taking out the console? Looks like the trans is a form of top loader. Cannot see from underneath the car.
Thanks

If it shifts normally in 3,4,5,R then my money would be on a broken selector fork inside the transmission rather than the shift linkage.

You can see the shift linkage from underneath the car, it's above the drive shaft at the rear of the trans.
