Just wondering before if it's worth taking my console apart whether the original stereo of my '99 legacy outback has audio components at the back. It's probably doubtful, but its worth a try asking. I just want to connect a 3.5mm headphone jack to play my ipod in my car. I'm sick of iTrip!! it sucks! Anyways, if anyone can tell me this, would be great. Thanks.

no aux inputs. if you have a cassete player buy one of those cassete adapters for 3.5mm plugs

You mean an FM transmitter? I don't see why not.

Best option is to replace your deck anyways. It's a pile of crap, as are 99% of all stock stereo systems. I have a JVC headunit that has tons of features, like an aux input, text display, preouts, a decent MOSFET amp, and dimmable display that I bought at Bestbuy (on sale) for 89.99. It's normally 105 bucks. It's not as crisp as my old Eclipse deck, but that one lacked auxiliary inputs, and didn't have as nice of a display.

DO NOT BUY AN FM TRANSMITTER.. even the $100 Monster brand ones suck

(not like I sell/install them at best buy)

An FM Transmitter can only transmit above 50hz, and below 22khz. not CD quality.. human ear hears between 20hz-24khz

also, the FCC made transmitters weak as hell (read cant get a clear signal to an antenna 5ft away) due to new regulations and complaints of people driving by others and picking up their transmissions.

the options you have are

-Buy a new Deck (good Idea since the factory Subaru deck puts out about 5Watts RMS power per speaker, most aftermarket will be 20watts, 18 is sony, 22 if pioneer/alpine)

-buy a Harman Kardon Drive and play setup, which is about $100, and only for Ipod.

-install a relay inline with the antenna (back of the radio) which when it sees power on the aux input siide, it cuts out the antenna (need a device that will send a Radio Freq through it, such as Zune/Ipod/etc

Just buy a new deck...

Thanks decke....

i think the inline relay seems like the best option. Thanks guys!

Btw decke, is it possible to see the actual radio plug out of the socket, i'd like to see how many pins it has.... or you can let me know where to look for one. Thanks again.

there no input for the stock radio unless you did a fm direct(lose the radio) or a cassette. so it might be worth while to buy a aftermarket deck thats ipod ready.
some decks that have aux input but need a accessory to use it

It's probably the best choice i guess. I might go for an Alpine deck or something with a tray installed below it.
