I am looking at buying a 93 impreza wagon with a blown engine....
can I put an EJ22 where the EJ18 was with ease or will it be a PITA??

It can be done as easily as any subaru motor swap can be. Youll need to do wiring harness splicing, and youll need the EJ22's ecu and such and such but it will bold up in every other sense of the word. My guess is it is too much trouble for the benefit.

I'm almost willing to bet the ECU is the same but some sensors are different. We put an EJ20 in place of an EJ22, spliced some wires for the sensors, dropped it in, plugged it in and she runs great...
Think my luck would be the same for the 1.8

generally, you get the ECU with the engine (sometimes not) but I wouldn't take any risks like that. Since they changed nothing when they put the EJ22 into the impreza, it should be pretty much all bolt on. What kind of tranny does it have? Auto will be harder, wiring wise :?

There's a guy in Taiwan who put an EJ25 block in his Impreza, it used to have EJ18. He mated his intake manifold to it, and plugged it in.
Ran fine.
He did have an eManage and messed around, it ran a bit rich.

Funny you should ask this... I was thinking that the EJ18 --> EJ25 swap was one of those "really" plug n' play swaps. So supposedly you can just throw it in there and be good to go but I wouldn't do it without comparing wiring diagrams first. Unfortunately this doesn't do me much good, I have the EJ22 and want something else

The guy that I mentioned, goes by the tag "redwagon" on NASIOC. He's also just started posting on Imprezasport.net (UK site).

ok guys, if your just going to the EJ22E (naturally aspirated) then just DONT touch the ECU if you dont want to. it may not run exactly perfect, but i ran my EJ22T (legacy turbo) motor in my 95 impreza on the 1.8 ECU and it was alright, the turbo threw it off though. but for NA swaps its no problem. swap over crank and cam angle sensors, other stuff if needed, and the rest will just plug right up with your 1.8 harness. easy stuff, dont have to bust out the ecu.
for the 2.5L swap, i think people on nasioc have done it with the 1.8 ECU as well and had good results. theres practically no difference in their maps. good luck swapping, its a lot of fun. had to make my first post worthwhile :)
