I just bought a 97' legacy L. I was wondering if it takes 10w-30 or 5w-30 motor oil. Its the 2.2L H4.

its 5W-30 for my 95 with an EJ22 (same engine)

10w-30 is certainly acceptable, and you might want to run it if you're having any problems with leaks or lifter noise.

Its not a big concern, but scottz is right. It depends on the season which one you use.

The lighter the weight, the thinner the oil (making it easier to start in colder weather). In the wintertime youd want 5w-30, and summer 10w-30. Although if it doesnt get too cold where you live you can live with 10w-30 most of the year.

I definitly have to go with 5w-30 during the winter because it gets to about -30 celcius on a regular basis  10w-30 really helped with my lifter noise during this summer though

oh, yeah, forgot to mention seasons: I use 5w-30 all year round, maybe 10w-30 if I notice any lifter noise (which I've been free of for a while :))

my car is very happy with 10w40. i spend a LOT of time on the highway at 3.5-4k for hours, and when i get off the interstate it idles so nice compared to 10w30 where it sounded like what just happened to it

Werd. I didn't think anyone used anything else other than 10-40. . . Hm.

I run it year round.
