I have a slight hesitation on acceleration. This has been a problem I've been tracking down for nearly a year. To date, I have replaced plugs and wires twice, fuel filter, air filter, front o2 sensor, and knock sensor, (the sensors were the only parts that threw a CEL). In the middle of all this, I had the head gasket changed. I'm inclined to think that was a separate issue, because the other problems were there before the HG went. I could be wrong, though.

Every few months, I start getting some hesitation, but no CEL. That will get worse until it starts backfiring. Still no CEL. I usually end up replacing the plugs and wires, which seems to fix stuff for the time being. Twice now I have let it go until I actually got the CEL. One was the knock sensor, which was not the fix to the problem, but a result of it. The other was the front o2 sensor, which never actually failed, but simply responded too slowly.

All the time these problems have been popping up, my gas mileage has been declining. I'm currently only getting about 250 miles to a tank of gas. I wish I could say I was driving aggressively to use up that much gas, but my poor little car just doesn't have any power most of the time.

When I change the plugs, I notice that #3 is significantly worse than the others. Why am I fouling plugs so badly after only a few months? Any insights would be extremely helpful.

Maybe there's a problem in the fuel system, or the TPS?

Hold old is the car and how many miles on it? Has the ignition coil pack ever been replaced?

When plugs are being fouled/running rich it's either a problem with spark or fuel delivery. I've seen coil/distributor problems that are bad enough to be noticeable but somehow not enough to trip a CEL. Sounds like you've replacing everything ignition-wise except for the coil pack. Very easy swap, though it's like $100 @ the dealer.

Never messed much with the fuel system so I can't help you out much there but it is possible you have an issue there like what's already mentioned.

^^^ +1 for year of car

just some suggestions:

Coil Pack!
Clean IAC
Make sure your PCV system is "breathing" properly
Are you using OEM plug wires? if not, make sure the brand new ones have the proper resistance.
Clean the MAF

thats all i can think of right now

Sorry, I forgot to include that stuff before. It's a 2000 Legacy L. Almost 120K miles. The ignition coil pack was changed three or four years ago.

I'm just learning how to do most of this stuff, so I don't really know how to clean the IAC or make sure my PCV system is breathing properly. If it's in the haynes manual or on this website somewhere I'm sure I can figure it out, though.

Thanks guys. I've got a wicked cold right now, but as soon as I'm well, I'll be out getting started on this stuff.

I fixed my avatar, but my car still doesn't run right. I just can't figure it out.

I'm just busting your balls. What about the fuel pump? Sounds like the same problems with my 92 till I changed the pump. Changing the coil pack may be an option too. Maybe do the MSD DIY.

Maybe do the MSD DIY.

If you can tell me what that is, I'll try it.

On top of all this, I looked under the hood a little bit ago and noticed that my front passenger side CV boot is torn. I hadn't noticed the smell of the grease cooking on the CAT because of my cold.

Dude, that sucks. Better replace the CV before it gets too bad.

I got a boot kit and did a quick fix on it. In a couple weeks I'll have some help so I can put on a new half shaft.

If you're fouling out just one cylinder, i'd suspect maybe the injector isin't closing properly so you're getting extra fuel in that cylinder. You might try swapping injectors around to see if the problem with fouling follows the injector or not.
