I am gettin the new wagon, i was wondering what i can do to lessen the weight of the car.
I am already getting a set of recaro's from japan. (Front Seats)
I tried for the VIS CF hood on ebay but they dont ship here..... the legacy hood i have now is freakin heavy lol
I already plan on stripping it down for Time Attack races but if i could get somelighter stuff swapped over it would be less stress stripping out before and after the races.

Coilovers will often times weigh less than the stock struts/springs. Lighter weight wheels. After market hollow sway bars of a larger diameter. take out sun roof glass, substitute CF panel or fiberblass. Take out spare tire, tools, rear carpeting and spray truck bedliner on it.

aluminum control arms are lighter, removing sunroof, replacing side windows with plexyglass, removing ac system, lighter brakes could help (two-piece rotors drilled and slotted), hollow sway bars, fender liners, stereo system, roof rack, removing all sound deadening materials. depends how far you are willing to go.

Ditch the electric window motors. Find a Brighton with rollups and use those doors, or replace the glass entirely with non-moveable lexan.
You could redo the spare wheel well altogether and ditch the ability to carry a spare (would require some welding). The island is pretty small anyway, right? So a tow would be easy to get.
For a time attack you're probably going to have to with coilovers anyway, and a custom springrate. Hollow swaybars will help, as will a carbon fiber rear brace.
Some CF race seats would help too.
Although all this weight removal is POST-engine, which is going to make it more tricky to hold the rear in line with the front during a hard turn.
A CF hood is probably the biggest weight reduction off the front end, besides lighter weight wheels and brakes.

Seems like a waste of money to me to spend all that just to lose a few LBS.. I mean, why dont you just completely gut the thing if you want it to be lighter.. take out all of the seats except for the drivers, spare tire, rear carpeting, tools, glovebox, hell.. could even pull off the dash. Just seems a bit excessive all for a little extra 'go'.

The idea of a BG wagon as a time attack vehicle is a little excessive.
Now as an autox weapon, it's not, because you can haul everything you need INSIDE the car to the staging area.
deadlydave
03-04-2008, 03:32 PM
for a 'time attack' car, you should just keep it stock and attempt to run in a stock class. If their format lets you, that is.
subba
03-04-2008, 04:19 PM
The time attacks here arent big enough for stages like that YET, they pretty much just started it so its in promotion stage FWD RWD & AWD Right now i am in it for the fun of it... sorta regret not gettin a impreza tho :(.
But i ran the wagon i have now, it held up pretty well, i already have megan coilovers which is literally 1/2 the weight of the stock bilstein Shocks+Springs. I Love the coilovers BTW. The main thing i noticed was that the front end of this car is really heavy & at one point i was paronoid that the suspension would break :-? but it held up great. I am tracking down the swaybars & braces as we speak but my main goal is to change the hood.
One of my buddies has a evo3, when i opened his bonnet, i only used 1 finger to pull it up..From then thats has been my main objective (get lightweight bonnet).
You guys got some good ideas :smt023 Keep em comming, i am taking notes :-D

Opps my bad, Its AutoX but they call it time attack here.
manuver through the cones while being timed, time taken of for each cone you eat type of stuff, Much Much more fun and less strain on the car than drag racing Plus you can make fun of the Cone heads

Taking the interior out but the drivers seat and dash will make a difference. You could also take out all the sound deaden material. Get the lightest rims you can. And if you upgrade your brakes dont go too big, it will slow you down (large heavy rotors).

stake a hole saw to your front bumper support, as well as other places were metal isnt used for structural rigidity, such as the inner braces of the doors. and yes remove all the sound deadening, but dont paint over it with bedliner, just a fresh coat of paint, or no paint doesnt matter.

You can relocate the battery to the rear of the car. This will actually add some weight to the car due to the extra wiring, but will give better weight distribution.

If you want to improve the weight balance a little, take the spare tire out of the rear, move the battery to the back, and get a cf hood.
As far as serious weight reduction, you're going to be removing seats, etc.

I am going to remove the ac somethime this week and on the weekend i am going to pull the dash and start cutting and removing more stuff, and i am removing the roof bars.
I raced it this weekend and i realized my rear end is too light or, it might be that my front end is too heavy so i am going to get a dremel and remove all the hood support and remove the latch and get hoodpins as well as relocating my battery to the trunk, i am going to keep my dry cell because i think i might need the weight back their, its like a optima.
My second biggest issue is the pos ABS, it keeps locking up on me when it is supposed to doing its job! :smt012
my brakes are great besides my non OEM pads, i am going to try and get a set of Hawk pads and brembo slotted. i tried out our local cuircuit a month ago and the guys said my rotors were glowing. i dont have pics of the glowing but i will update my MH1 thread laterone when i get home.
And i also learned with racing turbo Subaru's, an External Oil cooler is a must so that is next on my list then a LW flywheel.
i might pick up a Powersteering cooler later this week because they are cheap.
btw *Bump old post* :smt026

get a racing battery, that's about 25lbs right there. Weight reduction boils down to just how serious are you about reducing weight. Stripping the interior is easiest, stripping all sound deadening, eliminating the bumper beams, running just one seat, ditching A/C & power steering, Lexan glass panels, non airbag steering wheel...I mean do you seriously want real weight reduction or just want something along the lines of getting CF parts cause it looks cool?

How difficult is it to remove the front and rear bumper beams?
Also does Megan make a coilover for the 97 Outback wagon?

Also, I see in your thread that you still have the carpet in the car. Take it out, get a scrapper and blow torch and scrape off the sound deadening material underneath. On some cars that's another 30-50lbs of weight right there...
subba
03-03-2009, 09:47 AM
going to remove the carpet before weekend, lift off the sound deadening on the weekend and maybe if i have strength spray it over same time and strip my door cards and put a covering over the doors.
barely any legacies on the island so me finding manual windows is next to impossible :(
Reason
03-03-2009, 01:47 PM
My friend did this to his Talon TSi. Only thing in the interior was the dash, drivers seat, fuel cell and the nitrous tank. That was set um where the passenger seat was. he would switch them out so he could take people for a blast. It was scary fast, also had about $20k in the drivetrain.

you could just remove the mechanism from the rear doors and lock the glass up to save the weight. i know a guy that did this with his STi.

not much stiffening yet, i just need to do as much mods as i can until i get a proper chassis (lighter)

Welds add weight.
And an early post suggested welding over and cutting out the spare tire well...but doesn't that well add chassis rigidity to the rear?
subba
03-05-2009, 09:53 AM
i really dont want to go to extrememes about changing rear windows on the wagon, i wont be using this car to race forever, i am going to get a BD Brighton from japan after my debts are completely paid up next month.
I am going to race a legacy only because everyone here wants me to get a impreza.
If i cut and weld the spare tyre area will i be able to run 22m GC8 swaybars? :)

Yep. And you can install a smaller fuel cell inside the cabin which removes the need for a big fuel tank.

i'm waiting on one of my buddies to do a summitracing order, i'm going to get a few stuff when he does. He owns a parts store so shipping and clearance would cost me significantly allot less.
On the list so far.

i'm also changing out all the hoses + clamps in the engine bay and trying to find out which radiators can work with my car. I think the gc8 imprezas should be able to work.
but when ever i race with less than a 1/4 tank and do 360's the SOB shuts out

Let the games begin!
Remove:
-Airbags w/ ECU
-A/C (Compressor, condenser, evap, lines)
-Cruise Control (Stalk, vacuum lines, cable)
-Front/Rear Seats
-Carpets
-insulation
-Snorkus (intake silencer)
-Spare tire
-Fog lights
-headliner
-spare tire w/jack / iron
-rear seat belts
-passenger seat belt
-trunk interior
-rear trailer hitch
-front/rear sway bars depending on your application (some people don't run RSB during auto-x)
-rear wiper w/ motor
-door panels (make a bracket for the handle and the switches
-rear window regulators / wiring / door lock guides
-speakers / subs / amps / deck/ wiring
Replace:
-Sunroof replaced with welded metal panel or fiberglass/ c/f insert (But this thread is for a BG build and IIRC BG don't have sunroofs do to the raised roof)
-JDM control arms
-Aluminum Radiator
-light weight steering wheel
-forged wheels
-Braille Battery (light weight battery) (Do not relocate this to the trunk. You are adding more wire!)
-exhaust system (replace this with ebay knockoffs which are lighter and some very light stainless steel piping.
-remove gas tank replace with fuel cell
----at the same time remove fuel sending unit and fuel pump replace with aftermarket sending unit and inline fuel pumps.
-lightweight lug nuts
-lightweight crank/power steering/alternator pulley
-aftermarket rear trailing arms/lateral links
Now for the extremes:
-Lexan glass
-cut out door supports (just the leave the door skin and outer shell.
-cut out spare tire well (reweld flush plate)
-Lower the roof line (chop the roof)
-C/F or fiberglass hood/hatch/fenders/doors (good luck with these)
-take a hole saw to your front/rear re-bar (bumper beam)
-remove dash or replace with fiberglass unit
You would be surprised how much wiring you can remove. Approx 30-100 lbs depending on how far you go.
With all that weight loss the need for a roll cage is recommended and if you can afford some welds & rivet's to your frame. Remember strength = weight when it comes to chassis. Its just where you place the weight.
