I have a leak in my catalytic converter and I need to replace it. I've been getting crappy fuel economy all winter and I've been told by a mechanic that a new cat would improve my fuel economy. Is this true because I would hardly believe it.

Yes, cats would do that. So would a bad 02 sensor. Check if its the sensor first before the cat, more often than not is the sensor and not the actual part it's supposed to look after that's gone bad.

Yup. If the car thinks its cold, it'l run rich to compensate for the denser air.



Magnaflow sell converters that have an angled inlet and outlet that work great on our cars. It keeps the cat close to the flange so O2 sensors still fit before and after without lengthening. And they're cheap.

i just installed a random tech cat on my car. it is pricier, but sounds, looks, and performs well. i notice a difference right away, in acceleration and economy. if u have the money it is worth it.

Yeah, the thing is I don't have enough cash on me now... My mechanic tried to fit in a universal one he had laying around and modify it to fit in but there were issues about the o2 sensor interfering in the way or something. I'm not paying $400+ for one from the dealership so does anyone know where I can get a decent cat for a reasonable price? I'm in Toronto area.

Find a different mechanic. No reason why you can't cut and weld up a universal cat converter. Even if you have to move the o2 sensor a little and rethread a new location for it in your exhaust that should not be beyond what a muffler shop can handle.

Find a different mechanic. No reason why you can't cut and weld up a universal cat converter. Even if you have to move the o2 sensor a little and rethread a new location for it in your exhaust that should not be beyond what a muffler shop can handle.

I don't believe it's that easy to do something like that plus if you were to put in a universal one, it still wouldn't fit in snug because the the way the pipes are bent on the mid cat would be impossible to replicate.

Btw, this is the the middle cat converter that is leaking out of the 3 that the legacy has, which unfortunately is the one that has the o2 sensor.

I doubt it, but I'm gonna look into it. If it works, how much would u let it go for? Is it also the mid cat converter?
