I picked up an STI exhaust for cheap, it includes everything after the cat. I currently have on the car borla knock offs, factorys cats/pipes and an old flowmaster 40 series I had lying around, while the boxer rumble and overall sound is amazing it is just too loud for a daily driver, draws a lot of attention and I'm tiring of the noise quickly. I'm hoping with the STI exhaust and borla knock offs I can enjoy some nice rumble at a moderate volume.

I have the 'new' exhaust at the parents house which is also my "base of operation" for car repairs and such.

Can anyone confirm:

-The collector diameter (outlet) of the borla knock offs?
-the size of the STI exhaust, it is from a 2005 STI if that matters

-whether or not this is a resonator? I think it is because it seems too far downstream to be a cat, though it does have the shape of one:

if the answer to the header out size and STI exhaust size is both 2.5" that is great news! I just so happen to have a brand new stainless 2.5" J bend and a semi used high flow cat to complete the exhaust! Even if the header out is 2.25" and the STI setup 2.5" this should still work great. I'm decent at cutting/welding/fabricating and have the equipment for it so modding/adding/finishing the exhaust and moving hangers and such isn't a problem.

Thoughts on the sound quality and volume? Setup will be: borla knock offs, high flow cat, factory STI cat back.

I'm aiming for decent flow (hence dropping the factory cats), boxer rumble, nice on throttle sound, moderate volume at idle/cruise. Should I fear the CEL with this setup? Something a spacer on the rear o2 sensor will cure if it does get triggered?

I would forget the STi mid-pipe and just get a custom one made up. It'll have to be lengthened to work anyway.

Do this:
Borla headers
Hi-flow cat
Custom midpipe w/ resonator
STi axle-back

Get it as straight as possible and you'll love it.

I'm going to try to use as much of the STI setup as possible to save on cost. May as well since the pipes are perfectly good. I can weld an additional section to lengthen the mid pipe if need be. I think the J bend is my last piece of stainless though so I hope the 2 legs are long enough for the straight pieces.

Seems like the "chamber" for a lack of better words in the picture above is indeed not a catalytic converter. It must be there to minimize rasp and that is OK by me! I'm not looking for power gains just the right sound at the right volume, but since I have a high flow cat on hand I can't see not using it instead of the factory cats.

....wondering if that nice shiny STI exhaust tip will look silly on the legacy... I may abandon that for something a bit more modest but I need to see how it looks on the car first.

Check out peugoboy's ride for the STi tip, and also my member's thread. It's a perfect fit and suits the BD/BG/BK body well.

STi piping is actually 2 3/8" thereabouts (metric size, 60mm), any competent exhaust shop can ream out the end to mate it up to a 2.5" though. Get the spacer anyway, it's cheap insurance.

60mm, I have a tailpipe expander that should do the trick well enough. I may try and get this done on Saturday, though it'd be nice if it was a little warmer in the garage.

Yup, that's what the shop that did mine used to make the muffler fit with the 2.5" piping...
