BD/BG Rear Struts/Springs/Top hat compatability

Okay after many hours of research, my brain hurts and I need some clarification.

I will be using BG Struts and Springs on my 99 Wagon, I will also be using Group-N top hats for the front(GC and BG use same part number) and I want Group-N rear top hats too. I just need to make sure that the 02-03wrx Rear Strut Top Mounts(hats) will work on the Legacy BG Springs/struts. I know the GC rears will not work, due to improper bolt pattern/alignment. I know the top of the rear BG spring is a slightly different diameter than the 02-03 WRX rear spring, however is it close enough to fit and work properly. I dont like TEH Ghettoness and would rather run stock soft top hats, than poor fitting group-n top hats.

If anyone can confirm 02-03WRX rear top hats work on BD/BG legacy rear springs and struts, that would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going to use some WRX parts why not use them all? They are better than Legacy parts [read: newer if used; cheaper if new]

Nasioc guys part their suspensions all the time, find someone close, and buy all 4 corners of everything, low miles and probably well taken care of, for cheaper.


At any rate, you HAVE to use Legacy tophats with legacy struts and springs, you cant mix and match, its all or nothing.

I have nice legacy specific struts, and I am planning on using leggy wagon specific springs, and I want groupN top hats. Like I said, I have done the research, and have heard very very few people say it will work. Has anyone ran 02-03 WRX or Impreza rear top hats on Legacy BG/BD springs and can confirm it will work?

I ran Legacy tophats on 2003 wrx rear springs. They lined up pretty damned well, I autocrossed on them and generally beat the hell out of the car with no problems. There was some sag, but if you stick with wagon stuff you should be ok (or you can buy the spacers I posted about).

the back top hats are the same but the font ones have to be rotated, Left tophat for wrx = Right for legacy | Right tophat for wrx = Left for legacy.

The rear on both cars are the same.

I am using 02 -03 wrx coilovers so the Tophats definately Work.

Hang on. Coilovers have their own spring seat, so it's just the bolt pattern they have to worry about. Stock tophats have the seat AND the bolt pattern to consider.

So, given that, are you 100% sure?

i have a 99 legacy gt with 02-03 WRX Group N top hats with a legacy specific H&R spring and GR2 struts. i wasnt sure at first but they did fit perfectly fine no problem.


the back top hats are the same but the font ones have to be rotated, Left tophat for wrx = Right for legacy | Right tophat for wrx = Left for legacy. .

wow sorry its hard to keep up with recent post because every time i visit the site i gotta log in and it does not show recent replies sometime :-?

If i didnt know better i would have insisted the coilovers were legacy specific.

as long as the front tophats are switched, everything bolts up to the T, when i transfer the suspension from the white wagon to the gray one i will take some pics.
