This is the story of my '97 Legacy Brighton wagon. I purchased it from the original own in October of 2007 with 65k miles on the clock and ended with over a quarter million on it's second engine, and had many parts changed and upgraded.

that was bird #7....just hit #10 yesterday
also revised the list of planned mods to be more realistic of what i want done. i have determined that this car is damaged in some way from a previous shunt by the original owner's husband (note how the hood, bumper and grill dont quite line up) and is not worth sinking a ton of money into......next car, i will :) but thats a long way off...

well, i now own a set of WRX wheels.......they need paint (im leaning towards bronze) and matching tyres, but they were only 225 for all 4 plus the tyres already mounted on them.....i couldnt not jump on them as an early b-day gift to myself:

Only 80k?! I thought my car didn't have many miles compared to other people here.
I have roughly 110k, but 80k is awesome.. It's practically brand new considering how long these cars last!
Diggin' the wheels too.
sexy front bumper , where'd you pick that up from?

J-Hot is pretty good, I've had no problems with them.
You were first! not my style tho, I'd get there way late.. fashionably late that is..
And i just remembered that this has to be car eating bird season or something. My car has tried to eat 2 birds with no avail recently. Those zenki bumpers just don't do the trick. Maybe I should get a JDM bumper too?

You can do any color with a white car. As long as you like it, who cares?
I'd do Mazda Protege 5 yellow on mine if I had another set. I'm a bit sick like that though!

yeah the only color I'd stay away from for the wheels is white. Other than that I think it's pretty open, but my vote is a gold or bright green.

i think it would be more worth wile to look for an outback or GT hood with the scoop than drive that far for essentially the same thing

yep! got it for an awesome price too, only $50 im not much of a fan of chrome, so it works :)
that what you'd think.. but ive searched every parts store in town and none have a scooped gt or outback hood.. just the flat ones... im just gunna switch it out with some old lady's hood late at night, lol

the result of sliding on ice down our driveway and ending up in the flowerbed with our japanese maple. i was going really slow because i knew it was icey from when i left in the morning, but it had gotten worse and i slid. there is just enough of a slope that i picked up a little bit of speed and ended up in the flower bed. nothing is broken luckily, just some scuffs and green marks. i managed to get back to the street on the grass and thats where i will stay, haha

i do, two now actually
snow and ice are fun when its the right mix, but when its fresh powder on smooth as glass ice, it sucks, as i found out on wednesday when i was driving home through the park....they hadnt salted the park yet when i was cutting through and there was a bit of ice under our fresh snow.....this was the result:

it seems my WRX wheels are going to be making an earlier than anticipated appearance and will recieve new snow tyres since the all seasons that are on them are used and dont all match. im looking at getting these (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?sidewall=Blackwall&sidewall=Blackwall&tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=SP+Winter+Sport+3D&vehicleSearch=true&partnum=055VR6WS3D&fromCompare1=yes&place=4) which would then be swapped onto steelies once it is spring/summer. total damage is about $550.

Doesn't look as bad as the damage my wheels suffered. You should just buy a replacement wheel and swap the tire on to it. A whole lot less than $550.

out of curiosity (and also to help with rotating the tyres) i test-fit the WRX wheels and now i cant wait until i have them on for real. just need to be stripped back to stock, sealed, new tyres, ballanced and then put on the car

The Direzza's are ok until you hit standing water. For a daily I'd rather have something with a little more hydro-plane resistance.
fwa2500

another one i have been looking at is this: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... es&place=2 (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Exclaim+UHP&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=055VR6EUHP&fromCompare1=yes&place=2)
i dont know anything about the brand, but the reviews say the tyre is good, plus its in my budget.....why not?

99SUSSFD has these on his GTB wheels. For the pricepoint I would run some Falken ZIEX 512s or 942s. There's actually a guy near Columbus who was trying to sell a set of Fuzion ZRi's for $200...I think he's in the MWSOC classifieds on nasioc.

Yeah those are the tires I have. I like them pretty well so far. The only issue I have is from time to time the car wanted to pull left or right on its own, but that seems to have lessened with more miles put on the tires. I'm not sure if it's the tires or something else altogether, but I noticed it happening after they were mounted. I need to check the psi.
They're really decently priced though. I can't say I wouldn't recommend them.

YAY! so glad to see the wheels on the car, even if it is just a test fit.. what, the pink not doin it for ya?? haha jk
i agree with Huffer on tires. i have falken ze 912's and they're pretty all around good, i've always liked the brand.

grabbed a couple cans of duplicolor "super white II" paint at autozone, the finish is sort of matte, though part of that i think is because the strips are textured. it was the closest can o could find to the touch-up paint i had for my paint code. over all, im happy with the result

Did you take the bump strips off the car? I've been wanting to do the same, but want to hold out and get the slim JDM door trim. I wish I could just pick out a duplicolor, although I think my red would be hard to match.

impreza_GC8
10-22-2009, 12:40 PM
^ Looks like the workings of S-tech springs, the worst rated springs you can possibly buy. Be careful, those springs will blow the STI struts soon, if they havent already. Those springs are too low for their soft rates. The wagon looks fantastic though.
Huffer
10-22-2009, 12:45 PM
I was figuring H-techs because the car isn't as low as deadlydave's red BD on S-Techs.
On his car the S-techs made the tops of the tires disappear into the fender, fwa's wagon isn't quite that bad.
shoulda gotten H-techs dude. I have them and theyre great!
And I deal with ALOT of snow :)

about the snow, what do you mean it'll suck?! You have AWD which helps greatly! Then you have the bumper that eats birds, but instead will just eat snow and melt it! lol It's not like you offroad your car really anyways..

I'm still debating about getting rid of mine too. I wish I could ride in a car with the wrx s-techs to compare with the jdm legacy gt-b ones I have, to see if there's ANY difference.
Anyways, I wanna see a shot or 2 of the new ride height!
Ok, now I just compared my recent pic of my new strut bar to yours and I can see how high your car sits up. Your just looks much more enjoyable to ride in, I seem to be always worrying about if the next upcoming bump is gonna be too harsh for the soft springs. Kinda annoying... I mean I LOVE the low look. I LOVED how your car looked too! But ya just gotta find that happy medium of comfort and lowered-ness. And I think you got it!
Plus, comparing the underside pics, your lateral links are mostly horizontal with a little angle downward, while mine are, well.. awful... its like a 5 degree angle UPward.
Nice car! I really enjoy seeing how it's evolved!
Reuben
07-30-2010, 07:46 AM
I reckon stock STi or Bilstein get's that happy medium just right. For a start, you know spring and damper rates will be perfectly matched if you get the shocks too, which is good for handling. STi is also NICE and firm, they just really go well.
I love my cars stance... Stock GTB... It grips brilliantly, yet i can still take it off the beaten track... STi's stance is much the same, maybe a mm or 2 lower, but much firmer and better for grip.
fwa2500
08-06-2010, 01:02 AM
i LOVE how my car rides right now, it is just right, it isnt harsh over bumps any more, yet is still firm and actually better in the turns than with the s-techs (even without the rear sway bar). anyway.....coming soon, once i get rotors, pads and misc. other bits:

ya, manual swap will only happen if/when i do an engine swap to something turbo or 6 cyl but im starting to doubt it will happen with this car. the amount of tme it will take to same up the extra car to do it is also about the same amount of time i hope to be out of the country by andim not taking the car with me. would be way more cost effective to buy a new one there for less than the shipping charges would be.

bumping with small status updates and things to come in the next couple months:
done:
-headlights have been restored a bit, this last winter was not kind to them
-cargo area cover (picked up at a local u-pull)
-outback spare tyre well organizer tray (also a u-pull find)
in progress:
-cruise control is now installed, just need to put in the steering wheel control leaver (waiting until i get the wiper stalk listed below so i can do it all at once)
coming soon:
-variable speed intermittent wiper stalk
-outback gauge cluster with tach
-WING (needs to be slightly repaired and then painted, i have a spare as well if anyone wants it)
-25mm tribeca front sway bar
-kartboy solid front end links (bushings are about 3mm too wide for the mount on the control arms :-? )
-JDM door strips (about damn time, eh?)
-outback rear bumper (need to buy and paint, have source with several in usable condition)
-refreshed '95 EJ22 with dualport heads
bonus if things go according to plan:
-side skirts
-scooped hood
-full exhaust (borla reps, track pipe, '07 STi cat back with modified resonator)

Hotness. Are you drilling the stock bushings for the tribeca or going aftermarket?

im thinking about aftermarket, but i havent really looked yet. my stock bushings are like jello, so either way they are going in the trash, lol

they are likely what i will end up going with, seem to be the most readily available. ill let you know what i find either way!
gauge cluster and cruise control steering wheel swapped! none of the cars at the junk yard had the adjustable speed wiper stalks, so that will have to be done at another time :(

i think something is wrong with the cruise control module because it doesnt engage, unless thats just the lack of abs thing.....hmmmm

I might be interested in your L hood when you get done with it.

ill keep that in mind, it might need to be re-painted though. its not the original hood (as i suspected since the white doesnt match perfectly) and its previous black paint is showing on one corner

lol, as it turns out, hoods fit rather nicely in the back with the seats folded down, ive transported a couple now for a friend (spares for roh roh's rally car build). we will definitely have to work something out, maybe meet up at one of the columbus meets since c-bus is about halfway between us

UPDATE: going to TiC on monday to have that bolt drilled out, sway bar put on, exhaust manifold leak sealed (since the it will need to be dropped down anyway to get the bars on/off) and whiteline steering rack bushings installed
