I just picked up a 99 Leg GT Limited sedan, love the car, have already started to mod it. This is my 9th suby in 5 years, yes I have a problem. Anyway, this is the first that sounds like a v8.
When going thru the gears, 1500rpm to 6000rpm it sound s like a v8. Very growly and powerful(sounding) I've had other dohc n/a before and they never sound like this. I checked the exhaust for leaks, but thier are none. is the Exhaust in the GT different to create more growl?
Thanks for the imput.

As opposed to what other kind of subaru? By putting different exhausts on the car, could create the growl more than say an L exhaust. I could get my GT exhaust to growl a bit.. but not as much as my SPT exhaust does... which is nice!

I agree, This growl is more from the engine , anyway I'm not complaining. I like the sound, it's just not what I expected. My 98 Forester S with DOHC was a lot quieter. My 04 xt is much quiter, same with the 93 Legacy SS's I've had. Anyway if this is normal, I like it.

It shouldnt be too loud of a growl, however.. the boxer engines do make a growl exhaust note when you put a larger exhaust on them. My GT exhaust was louder than some of my friends subaru's I have ridden in however.. so maybe you just haven't adjusted to the noise yet. Not sure what else it could be.. but maybe someone else will chime in with some ideas.

u think yours sounds like a v8? listen what an unequal length header and a free flowing exhaust can do... this is grayguys car pre turbo build btw...

Its because they have a completely different design than an I engine.

But sounding like a v8...idk about that, but they at least sound good. instead of WWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Thanks Guys, never owned a I engine, always been into the subies, I suspect the original owner had put a header on it. Anyway thanks for the responce.

Solved the problem. I finally had a chance to change the oil in the tranny and engine,
What a differnence, the tranny oil was a black thick goo. not good at all and it only had 1.5 quarts in it. Once changed the sound dropped in half. I think crappy oils were just making things loud and noisy, purrs now...Time to mod..
