I've been looking into getting a JDM front bumper for my wagon. I came across this one fs offered by JHot on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-Subaru-Legacy-BD5-95-99-Kouki-Front-Bumper-Pole_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33640QQihZ002QQitemZ120236374087QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

It has this pole on the drivers side of the bumper.
They refer to it as a "bumper pole". An O/E switch is also included. What does this thing do?
I imagine its for parking... maybe like a curb feeler for tight spots in Japan?

Thanks for helping me out!

I am thinking maybe a pole goes just under the headlight and then it swings around to the front so you can park right up to the bumper of the car infront? It's too high for a curb feeler.

Why bother? You will never use it. Besides It's illegal to park the drivers side to the curb.

they are made so that you can park really close to stuff. It basically lets you know where the end of the car is.. that way you can get really close. Most have a light on them.. but.. this one doesnt seem to? But yeah, pretty much useless. I was checking out that bumper too.. only reason people would want it is because its 'jdm' and you might show it off at some point in time as a 'cool toy'. in my opinion, it just makes the bumper look bad. haha.

That would actually be pretty slick as some kind of retractable aerial or something. I dunno.

Why bother?

Why not? It's obviously a very rare OE item. I like to differentiate my Legacy as much as possible while still remaining clean & OEM.
-Do I need mirrors that power fold and heat up? No, but I think its badass and cool little gadgetry. This bumper pole falls along the same lines. It may be unnecessary, but its something fun to show off. I think I'm going to buy the bumper today.

Thanks for the reply PWT & Digi.

I don't think it's an OE item.

Really? When I look at the switch & mounting brackets on the inside of the bumper it makes me think it is OEM.

Also, its mounted really nicely on the bumper, very flush.

-Huffer your probably right though, as I've never seen it before

Why wouldnt it be an OE item? I think it probably is.. as these are very common in japan. Who knows.. could have came with the 'limited' over there or something? I know lots of JDM cars such as honda, acura, etc.. come with these. So I wouldn't doubt it. However.. just email the the seller and ask him.. maybe he knows.. or try to search google? Good luck man!

I used to live in NZ, right around the corner from one of the largest JDM importers in the country, and not once did I ever see an aerial attached to the front bumper of any Subaru. My local Subaru club would have meets there so there was plenty of time to check out the cars. 94-99 BG/BD, 94-01 GC/GF, early RS, post 2000 RSKs, you name it.

I don't doubt that it's probably a very nice install, but I do doubt that this part was installed at an FHI factory.

^^ Thats some good insight. Thanks Huffer. I'm scraping pennies together right now to purchase this bumper today.

huffer: do you think that because you lived in NZ however.. that maybe the cars in japan are different because of space requirements? Did they have the folding mirrors in NZ? Did any other cars in NZ have these?

NZ is one of the largest JDM markets - there are virtually no car factories in NZ. We (NZ) import new and used cars DIRECTLY from Japan. We have the same safety requirements, are RHD and use pretty much the same fuel grade.

I have also been to Osaka, Japan. The roads there are actually quite wide, and the inner city parking spaces are not overly small, except when you are parking on a "stacked" parking building.

i doubt that "style" bumper would come with a pole but their might be a Small chance that the bumpers that have the little black lip on it would.
(Like the bumper on my first wagon).

Even if its fabbed or not, i dont think it suits that bumper very well but who knows, everyone has their own taste.

my $.02

Well I showed andivic the bumper and he said it's OEM but very rare. I guess for "JDM points" it's call, but functionality is weak sauce.

^ Yea.. thats what i figured.. i'm assuming it must have came on something like the 'limited 30th edt.' like we have here.. something like that. and yes.. its totally for JDM points.. thats why most people get them in the honda forums and such.. just a little extra gadget that no one else has. I think they look a bit strange.. but hey, to each their own.. and its only like $40 more than the regular bumper.

Let me know how much you get the bumper for shipped from them.. id be interested to know. u can pm me if u want!

If you buy this I want to see the retracto-arm DIY. You know, stuck behind a car at a green light. Instead of honking, give them a friendly knock on the truck.

Let me get this right, you are allowed to cross traffic to park on the upside of the street? And pull out the opposite side of the street into oncoming traffic? I would look into your traffic laws if I were you.

What is the point of these, when you hit something do they wiggle so you know you hit it?

sorry, just think they're pointless unless you have a plow.

Remember in a RHD car, the curbside is on the LEFT. So if you have an aerial that rises up to help you know where your most extreme outside border is (the LEFT FRONT BUMPER) - you're less likely to scrape.

In Japan some curbs are quite high.

I'll let everyone know how the install goes. It probably wont be for a while as I had to stretch my budget just to purchase the thing.

-To all t3h hators... I understand it has no use to me here in the States. I'm not getting it because I need help parking or that I park in tight parking areas. I bought it because its extremely rare and I really love cool gadgetry like this + JHot is also including JDM air in a box w/ the purchase

Nice buy! How did you talk them into the JDM air box? haha dope! How much was shipping on it.. Pm me bout that.

And also.. LOL i've done the parking on the wrong side of the street thing here as well.. no one seems to care i guess?..

didnt even know it WAS illegal till you told me.. must be a 'city' thing where there are actually more people than here.
