View Full Version : Anyone ever have an oil leak between engine/oil filler neck?

So now and again if I am running the blower and idling for too long, I'll get that faint smell of burning oil. In over 3,000 miles, I've only burned up half a quart, so the leak is minimal.

I look in the engine bay and the drivers side of the engine is a bit wet. I did suspect it was the side seal (there's side seals for our motors, correct?) but the way the oil is collecting on top I thought I'd look around more.

The oil filler neck our motors have (since we don't have "normal" motors with oil caps on the single valve cover) is bolted down with 2 10mm bolts. Well I can somewhat shake the filler neck back and forth. In the small crevice between the neck and motor I can see a film of oil.

so I tightened both bolts but it still has some play to it.

Is there a seal between the filler neck and motor, and does that sometimes go? I hope it's a separate part # than the rest of the seals from the dealer...think so?

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

My motor is a 96 2.2L with 95k miles on it. Didn't think it'd be the side seal this early on the more reliable 2.2l motor.

I thought I had one but I pulled it, and cleaned and put fujibond on it and its still leaking so is probably the valve cover

if it is filler neck then when you do your next oil change take it off clean all old gasket if it has any and put some rtv on it bolt it back up let dry for a few min should do the trick i think.

i dont know if they will have a specific part by aplication but if you have it removed just have them match one up in a master o-ring set

I had it happen on both my engines. Just some Rtv took care of it.

Ahh good. Not that it happened to you, but good to know it does happen on these cars from time to time.
