Hey guys, i just bought a 98 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT and I might need some help. I get up every morning to take my brother to school. So i start the car up and let it warm up, cuz its still kinda cold. Anyways, after idle'ing for about 5 minutes, I smell gas from the inside of the car. Could it be a leak or the fuel filter? There is no gas on the garage floor either. Is this normal? and another thing.......When the car at idle, it tends to shake a little. Not very noticable, but i've never had that happen to any other car ive driven/owned. It could just be the boxer engine, (I've never owned a subaru before), but a friend said it could be misfiring. If it was misfiring, wouldn't the CEL (check engine light) go on?
Thanks for any replies. But besides those things, the car is awsome and i love it. [/b]

let it warm up and smell the fuel rails on both sides its probably the rail on the pass. side of the vehichle ive seen this before at the shop many of times and if its not that check your fuel filter hoses/conections or if the car recently had a fuel injection service you might just be smelling the spray from the job.

The engine should idle as smooth as the next guy.
Take a sniff of the exhaust, gas odor present?
Any blackish looking exhaust fumes at idle?
Could just be an overly rich condition thats causing the shaky idle and gas odor. An under hood gas smell would be a more serious issue from a safety standpoint since it would mean you have a leak.
Sounds like the smell is getting pumped in from the heater vents...? Then the underhood/fuel rail may prove true.

K, i found it...lol...it was soo obvious. It was a hose that had a big split in it on top of the engine. Thats why my gas mileage kept getting worse. Thanks for the replies guys!
