View Full Version : My motor is ticking me off

I have OCD, and one OCD thing I do is shift every single time at about 3250 rpm, unless I'm revving it to redline or 5,250 rpm (another ocd thing). Well, the problem is, if I do this consistently enough, I get a big huge lump right at 3,250 rpm. So, if I go to run the engine up to redline, there's a huge dip in power right there at 3,250, and it starts surging up and down the rev band too (it'll surge at 4,500 rpm, 2,200 rpm, etc).

So, I did something difficult, and changed my shift pattern, to 3,500 rpm, and it seems to have helped, but only slightly. I still have to reset my ECU every few days because my engine surges so much throughout the rev band.

Should I replace my MAF sensor? I doubt it's bad if it's doing fine for the first few days. I also just changed my intake, extending it down into the wheel well. I'm hoping this will work better compared to my SRI.

I also found that running Plus instead of regular helps to some extent, but the next day, it'll be all surgey again. Combined with the oil consumption, could this be indicating the end of my engine soon?

Cliffs notes, my rev band feels lumpy and sucks.

None at all.

almost sounds like you have a broken valve spring or your valve springs are floating

Well, I've been keeping my RPM above 2,000 rpm whenever possible, and no surging at all now. Might have been a bad learning after resetting my ECU the previous time. Though I hadn't thought about valves and valve springs.

Mine does it also. I'm not concerned about it, it only does it if I'm in 4th and I go WOT.

My car was bucking in every gear from surging, first through fifth.

What kind of intake do you have?

The MAF may be unhappy.

A CAI. I'm running the intake all the way into the fender well. It's rather quiet actually, but thinking about putting the snorkus back on.

Clean your MAF sensor, also how long ago did you have the CAI? Sometimes and overoiled cone filter will gum up the MAF sensor too.

I've never oiled my air filter with this MAF installed.

Just to make sure it isn't my MAF, I'm going to reinstall my airbox and old MAF, which is a "known good" unit.

I don't know if this is related, but I cleaned up my engine bay last night and discovered a recirculating hose had popped off the air intake. I reconnected it and now my idle is all funny, probably because the ECU is relearning.

Cold starts are easier however.

I don't have any hoses or anything loose or disconnected, I checked all of the vacuum lines and other assorted hoses.
