Alright this is my second time typing this since my cookies must have spontaneously cleared because it said I wasn't logged in and lost it for me... blah. So this may be slightly abridged this time around.

So I saw just as the title says a 2nd gen legacy outback sedan on the way home and was like oh cool so i tailgated to read the badge yep legacy outback sedan after a while passed him to look at the front and side yes indeed outback sedan on a second gen! Woooo!

So since these weren't available until around 2003(?) I'm thinking this dude is just kinda crafty like that unless maybe they had it in canada?

My guess on converting a sedan to an outback: Springs/struts, wheels/tires, 2 tone paint and maybe outback front bumper, different speeed sensor or recalibrate/replace speedometer, and a couple of badges.

Sounds like a fun idea, but personally I'd keep my single tone blue and my bumpers, just get some outback wheels and throw winter tires on it. If you had both sets of struts/springs whole it would be a minor ordeal to switch them back and forth (what, 5 bolts each?) so could it could be one hell of a winter combo. If you just used it as a winter combo you may even get away with ignoring the speedo or driving a bit "slower."

Hmmm the wheels are turning

I'm crafty.
or is it arts-y farts-y.

1997 SUS (short for 'Sport Utility Sedan') was available in very small numbers in the New England area only.

SUS (Outback sedan) went national in 1998

You need to do some reading. Outbacks were available in '96, nationwide.

Ahhh ok I had heard something about the SUS but didn't pay much attention to it so didn't realize it was basically a rare outback sedan. And Tris, speaking of reading, did you catch the part where I said sedan? I'm assuming not since even if you did your info would be incorrect:

1997: the Limited Outback was introduced. A sedan version, the Outback SUS (short for 'Sport Utility Sedan') was available in very small numbers in the New England area only.

From cars101.com and yeah I love that site, been very informative, been reading it since before I even bought the legacy.

And since I live in NE area I guess that would explain this strange little vehicle...

Now that we've got that covered, and we definately know that I don't have an SUS, on to the fun stuff. So how about that crafty conversion I was talking about?? Did some more research after I posted lastnight and found a guy who converted an outback wagon to legacy GT sedan suspension (http://www.geocities.com/limeylight/handling.htm). Apparently the Outback has 3 things that give it the ride height: higher spring perches on the struts, bigger wheels/tires, and a thick spacer between the front and rear crossmember and the body. Now the guy on his site said he wasn't sure whether or not that was different on the GT since he had nothing to compare it to, but since his final ride height was higher than that of a LGT then either that does indeed lift the vehicle more or the fenders make up for the difference.

So I'm thinking if I were to do this I would need those spacers, or some sort of spacer. He didn't remove his but since he was lowering that only gives him negative camber and if I were going the other way then it would give me positive camber, in theory. That would be kinda bad.

GT bumper ('98 ) is about 1.25" taller than the Outback bumper ('99)

If you fail to see stuff on the road now, then you must be blind. :D
