Help! Painting the shoddy looking chrome on my grille black

What works best to get the fake chrome on the grille off? and where can i find mesh?



edit: Or do i sand the grille and then paint it? since i looked at it and its all chrome plastic as in theres its not paint just plastic chrome. I dunno what to do lol :S

I sanded mine, and painted black with Krylon Fusion..... worked pretty good, until I dropped it installnig it, and chipped it up...... I would try 2 coats of Fusion (light coats) with plenty of dry time afterwarods to harden.
BTW.... I'm jealous..... Spent a week in Homer last July.... would love to live there!

Sand it, mask it up and hit it with a couple of coats of paint.
Flat black is the best for the OEM look.

That chrome is a pain to paint over. I painted my grill all black before I bought the one I have now and after three days the paint chipped and the chrome was out again on three spots grr.

I agree with huffer flat black is that way to go

there is no point in painting a grill in WA. there are to many damn rocks on the road. just replaced 4 windsheilds. only 1 on my car, but cousins all 3 of his were broke. goodluck on you paint job.

Alright thanks guys i think I'm finally going to get around to it today, I've been driving around grill-less lol i actually kinda like how it looks without the grill, but i think it will look a lot better, its surprising that i only have 1 chip in my windshield for all the gravel they put on the roads up here, Thanks for the help guys!

I've already had to replace one windshield because of a chip that eventually grew to halfway across the screen.

Anyway, sand it to bare plastic, use adhesion promoter, then paint it black. From my experience, the promoter really helps paint to stick on vinyl/rubber/plastic surfaces.

You can also try to dip it in 409 cleaner to get the chrome off...I'm not sure if that can work on automotive grade plastic-chrome, but it works well on the chrome plated plastic models.

My "L7" grille has the chrome peeling off it, so I'm going to sand and paint it this summer. It's the only chrome on the car, I think, so that's an even better reason to get rid of it.
