new legacy....got the itch

ok...summer's approaching...and i just rented an apartment with a garage...and i just got a new legacy...i've got the aftermarket itch

1999 Legacy GT Limited
40k Miles (not that it matters, i'm just bragging)
Black (which actually looks red in the sun)


I have ZERo budget, so this is probably going to be more dreaming than anything, but i'd like to keep it to realistic dreaming (no turbo kits, no 3.3 drops, don't get stupid).

What should I think about? Firstly I'd like to get it to breathe right, so (in order) i was thinking, intake, full exhaust, intake manifold. Then handling; sway bars (F&B), and struts.

So, can someone point in the right direction to where to get such parts for such a vehicle? Also, other ideas are welcome.

If you have a zero budget, then forget doing anything that costs money like exhaust and struts.

Delete the snorkus in the fender, maybe you can cut off the dildo-looking resonator and cover the hole with something.

At 40k, you could throw some springs on without worrying at buying new struts. I would.

Seriously though - what kind of response did you expect? There are some free things you can do to your car, but you've been around long enough to know that pretty much everything on your list is going to take SOME money to do - even if it's $20 for an ebay intake.

intake and full exhaust will run around $1000 depending on parts chosen. sway bar, strut bar, and springs/coilovers is another $1000. start with the power then do handling.

You could cop those JDM projectors that someone is selling right now for pretty cheap no doubt.. that might be a good start.

Then maybe take off your fogs (if you have them) and polish them up / sand them to make them look crystal clear.

You could probably find a lightened crank pulley for around $50 if you search for a while.

Also, make an ebay style intake for around $30

Could make some nice mud flaps for cheap!

Sure.. this stuff costs SOME money.. but I dont think its too out of hand for you. Just save up some small cash over time, save your change.. and keep your car clean! A cool thing I like to do is pull all the interior pieces out of the car, wash them all in the shower, and then spray them down with some 'tire' cleaner stuff (the stuff that makes your tires nice and shiny). Then detail the rest of your interior as well.

I think keeping your car clean is about as valuable as any mod you can buy.. since they dont really make our cars go faster anyways without some big money.

Actually that wouldn't be the best route to go. Best thing Good tires>brakes>suspension>go fast bits. Everybody want the power, but not a car that can handle it.

Honestly, how much power is an intake and exhaust really doing to add? I don't think it's enough to really NEED bigger brakes and better handling than teh stock GT already possesses.

If it were me, I'd do springs and sways, wheels and tires, then find a used or ebay intake and have an exhaust shop do a custom header-back exhaust with a single high flow cat and muffler of your choice. I really can't see it costing you a grand if you go the used/ebay and custom route.

You could dig in a junkyard for an outback rear swaybar.

Suspension bits first give you most bang for the buck in my opinion.
