Confused by offsets

I read the sticky and I'm still confused.

I can't find the Rota D2's for a nice price. So... I've been looking around for other wheels and I keep running into offsets that are less then 48 which is the correct one for the BD

So question is how low can I go? and no I am not playing limbo or maybe I am kinda

I've seen nice wheels from offset 42 to 45 are those OK? and they are 17X7 and 17X7.5

I'm not a BD expert, but a 7 or 7.5" wheel should fit with a 42-45 offset. One again I'm going to tell you to use the miata.net wheel size calculator and to mess around with measurements there.

EDIT: Played with it for about a mintute or two and using a 205/55/16 size tire (stock LGT), a 225/45/17 is almost exactly the same size.

I'm also confused, i found rims I like and they are 17x7 offset 40. no idea if they will fit.
