95 EJ22 JUST BOUGHT IT NEED HELP

OK i just bought my first subaru it's a 95 bk with an ej22 and 173000 i took it to get emissions tested in az and it failed miserably. When at idle (500rpm low i assume) it like rocks back and forth like the timing is off or something i dunno? it burns oil pretty bad? and over all it just seems to run a little rough. I'm putting new plugs, wires, pcv valve, flushing the oil and switching to synthetic this weekend what else should i do right now i just wanna pass emissions so whatever tips and tricks you guys have lemme know thanks bunches

sea foam your car. search for sea foam on the fourm, or look at there website. it works awsome.

Switching to synthetic won't do any good, except maybe expose some oil leaks.

Tune-up items like you've mentioned are good, the rocking back and forth could be because of worn mounts.

You might need a new catalytic converter, and/or new O2 sensors - especially if they're the original items.

Any CEL codes? If not I would start with those cheap maintenance items:
- oil change/filter
- plugs
- wires
- air filter
- fuel filter

yeah the cel is on and it has obdII so i'm goin to autozone later today to get it read i just want this motor to last til august cuz a buddy of mine is coming back from iraq and he wrecked his 02 wrx right beffore he left so with any luck his mom kept it

Are you having any heat issues, or is it just emissions? Worn mounts sounds like that might be why the engine's shaking. The stock catalytic converter's probably near the end of it's life too, especially if the engines' been running rich.

No heat issues and i took it to auto zone to have the computer read and it wouldn't read i also just did my first treatment with sea foam i'll probably do it once or twice more and ya you guys are a ton of help i appreciate it

did you sea foam it threw the PCV vavle? if you didnt and you do do it make sure you do it outside. it will smoke alot.

ya i did it didn't smoke horrible bad but it did for a good half hour afteer just letting it sit for 5 minutes i'm letting it sit over night now. I just want this thing to pass emissions is there any additives to cheat it?

wheni seafoamed my car it smoked out the napa parking lot. ppl thought it was on fire. well i dont know if there are any adds to cheat the system. seafoam, and a good tuneup should help alot.

I know I'm reviving an old topic, but I'm very confused about an earlier statement.

'95 Legacy's have OBD-II? What the... Then why don't '95 and earlier Impreza's? OBD-II wasn't required on all cars in the US until '96, so I don't see any reason for the '95 Legacies to have it, though I suppose it would explain why there wasn't any huge change until '97... well crap, that's going to make doing an engine swap and still expecting to pass emissions quite a bit tougher (then again when I do that I'll be running a fully standalone engine management system, so maybe I can use that as an excuse).

Some 95 models got the OBDII system. Some didn't - it depends on the month of production.

You could always send the VIN# to Subaru America - their mysubaru.com team is really good at diggin up tech info for owners. Tell them your mechanic won't work on the car because it's OBD1, but you want them to confirm it. :)

He-hey! That's not a bad plan :thumbup:... though I'm thinking I'll just ask my mechanic after he's done reinstalling my new oil filter spindle (the pink elephant that my car was taken to last year before I got it from my dad stripped it an managed to not tell anyone!). I'll probably to just ask them to sell it to me instead of actually installing it so I can just do it myself in order to not spend 48 extra dollars of man hour for an 8 dollar part.

Mine is a april 95 and its OBD 2 so i dont know how far it went back

could you post the results of the test (ppm of the gases) if arizona give you the results sheet
