Looking for new performance summer tires

I'm looking at some new performance summer tires and was looking at the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01s. Anyone have any experience with these, or any other recommendations?

I've had Fuzion ZRi, and they are good performance summer tires ...really cheap too. handles great but only thing bad was the noise...and dont drive in the rain :lol:

For ultra cheapie, I really like the Kumho ECSTA SPT.
For not quite so cheap I like the Falken ZIEX 952

If you're a baller, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's are hard to beat.

For a budget the Falken Ziex 512's and the Hankook Ventus HR II's are pretty good. If price is no problem, the Potenza RE070 used on earlier STi's are insane for grip but a bit scary in lower temps and standing water.

The falkens come highly reccomended from a friend. Not so great tire wear, but extremely grippy.

I highly reccomend the Hankook Ventus RS-2's. worked fine in the wet, but in low temps they were like riding on plastic. Awesome, awesome grip. With your selection of suspension mods, you'd have a lot better handling with these than I did, and I loved 'em.

Falken ZIEX 512's are an all-season though - not a dedicated summer.

But heck, at $55 per corner for 205/55/16, I would run them as summer tires.

Hahaha, unfortunately I'm not a baller. Thanks for all the responses. Yeah, I want a dedicated summer tire, I've got some Blizzaks right now (I do a lot of heavy travel over great distances during the winter so I really can't afford not to have snow tires). So all season performance/low temp isn't an issue. The wet performance of the Falkens does scare me a bit (and plus my budget isn't super tight), so I looked into the Hankook Ventus R-S2s, and overall a lot of people really like them. I can pick them up for about 90 a piece locally, what do you guys think?

I'd go with general exclaim UHP, thye get good reviews. I'm planning on getting a set myself. I have used Sumito HTR Z tires before they redesigned them, and they were crap. Currently using Kumho Ecsta SPT, and they lasted forever compared to previous High Performance Summer tires. I also used Kumho KH11's, but they don't seem to be making them anymore, that was another good tire.

I'm running Kumho Ecsta MX's and I love them. Been through a few autocrosses and it's looking like they're going to last a while despite how grippy they are (muchmuchmuch better than my A/S tires :roll: ).


And they're priced right!

The Falken ZIEX 512's actually do very well in the wet. They are very resistant to hydroplaning... and are cheap enough that you can afford to buy a new set of winters every year.

wow... I can make a list that goes on forever...

Ziex 512s were good, but have been replaced with 912s. I am currently running the 912s and they are good as well, but are an M+S. I've run Federal 595s, both the competition compound and the street compound... Goodyear F1s are a great tire, but not worth the pricetag. I tend to stay away from all Kumho tires, never had any luck with them, the 711s all the way up suck in my opinion. In all seriousness probably the best tire I've run for dedicated summer is the BFG gforce, not the fire tread pattern version, but the TA KD with the blocky pattern.

I am running the HRII'2 now and I like them more than the 512's. The Hankooks though are on their third summer, with no racing, and are running pretty thin - not that bad for pretty good performance I guess. I think I will be going Kuhmo Ecsta next.

In reference above to all season tires and the HRII's like plastic in the cold - most, if not all, all season tires loose significant grip near freezing temps, so actual winter tires are always recommended for parts of the continent that receive a real winter. Don't le tthe tire companies fool you into thinking that all seasons are fine for winter (its a conspiracy :wink: ).

Kumho MX. Excellent performance, both dry and wet. According to comparison tests there are better tires out there now, but since it's an older design the price is low compared to the other tires.

for 90 bucks? Go with the rs-2's. And, besides handling great they look totally, totally badass.

I have been really pleased with the 215/45/R17 BFGoodrich KDW T/A 2 that I have just got. Really great, even in the rain.

So I ended up going with the Bridgestone RE-01Rs :grin: From what I've read, they are simply unbelievable. They're not here yet but I can't wait.
